I have been searching high and low to no avail for the maker of these grips. I love 'em, but my wife and I both want them on our 586. It would be easier to find a second pair. There is no way they are S&W, though they were tagged as such at the LGS (who claimed to have no idea where they came from - must have been a pull from something).

They've got a double line around the checkering. That should be a dead give away. They feel like they are precision laser cut.

Anybody seen these before?

They look like they were made by Altamont. What you have is for a square-butt revolver, and Altamont now only shows the round-to-square conversion.

At any rate, they're gorgeous.

I've been looking at a lot of grips lately and they look like Altamonts to me as well. If not them, maybe Eagle... but I'd still bet on Altamonts.

They're not Altamonts, or maybe not a public offering by Altamont. Who knows who makes them for S&W.

Anyway, I was reading other posts about the NEW 586, and I went to look at it on the S&W site. My jaw nearly hit the floor. No, I really hadn't seen this before. Obviously my gun is not this new gun - mine's a 586-1. Looks about the same, minus the lock. And I imagine the firing pin too, but their picture isn't cocked.

But take a close look at the grips in the photo.



So I'll be calling S&W in the morning to see if I can get another pair. I think my LGS must have gotten one in, and changed out the grips for the customer, who probably wanted rubber.

They're 100% Altamonts. Go to Altamont Company and the same exact grips are for sale there.

Altamont is one of the OEM authorized grip (stock) makers for S&W and they are licensed to use the S&W medallion. For a $10 fee they will add S&W medallions to any of the S&W grips. They do not offer this for Ruger, etc.

There are many knockoffs on Ebay and other sites with the medallion, made in Thailand or wherever but for about $30-50 for Altamonts you can't go wrong. They're also the grips S&W uses on all the "classic" models, so you're using the real deal made in the USA, not some copy made in an overseas sweat shop.

Altamont makes lots of OEM grips for S&Ws these days. The OPs grips are Altamonts for sure; they're also one of the few grip makers that can legally affix the S&W emblem on their grips, by the way (maybe the only ones).

The SSR models and many others come with Altamonts from the factory.

The grips on this 547 came right from S&W labeled as "S&W service grips" and they are made by Altamont:

These are square butt. The original 586 is a square butt; I can't speak for the classics, I've never seen one, just that picture.

That's not them. First off the checkering is a different layout. And they're not diamondbacks. Nor do these have the double score line. If you study the pictures above you will see the differences.

Take a careful look at the picture below, and the picture to the right of it (at least in my browser). They're not the same grips.

that I used when I bought both sets I had, one of which is shown in photo (D).

Mike, I think you'll be happy with them. To reinforce what Ogy has told you, I ordered a set last year (K-Frame SB targets). They are the set on the bottom of this picture.



For reference, I included the original set of grips that came with my 547, and the current service grips that S&W offer (on the actual revolver. S&W had that same picture for the targets when I ordered them and I immediately noted the difference. I guess Altamont lazer cuts them, but the outline between the checkering and the actual grip surface is sort of a giveaway; the older S&W walnut grips have a deep groove in that area instead of a cut line. Older target grips are the same. Anyway, what you have ordered should be what Ogy has shown you, and the picture of the grips on the bottom of my picture. And they are made by Altamont.

The targets look fine, but never quite fit my hand right (too big for my small hands), but the grips themselves look good and are well made. I wanted extra grips for my 547 as I carry it outside a lot, while wearing other gear, and didn't want to gouge up my originals. These Altamont/S&W issue grips are a great compromise, and since they are dymondwood, they are harder and much more resistant to dings and dents than the original softer walnut stock grips. I think you'll be happy with those targets.

FYI, I do not like lacquer on wood grips, or stocks for that matter. I stripped the lacquer off those service grips on the 547 and the originals too, but not the targets. The "grain" on the dymondwoods became much more distinct and looked much better, especially after applying some good wood oil. I may try the same on those targets as I think they would improve in looks quite a bit after that. My OEM S&W grips looked like cheap plywood planks until I did the same and they look considerably better after my "treatment", so much so, I had to reconsider not having them on my 547 any longer, but I really wish to preserve them for harder use.

Thanks; get one while you can. It's gotten to where I barely even look at the cost anymore, I'm a seller's dream. They are getting harder to find and more expensive. I had to sacrifice an original M1917 for this one and have another 547 stashed away in Texas. Now all I need is a 3" RB and I'll be happy!
