Model 10-7 Without Pinned Barrel
I stopped in a lGS at lunch today and there was only (1) used S&W wheel gun in the entire store. A beautiful Model 10 snubby with the box and papers that looked like it just came from the factory. Sq Butt without W/O P&R. I looked at the Model # and the SN and then pulled out my I phone SCSW to be sure because I thought this gun should have been P&R.
Sure enough the DOB of the gun was 1981 just like a 10-7 should have been. Is this another example of S&W not having exact dates for engineering changes.
The Model # for a non -P&R from 1982 would be 10-8. This was definetly a 10-7. The mfg date even lines up with the S/N.
Any comments..?
BTW he was asking $499... I thought that was very high..
I don't think there is any extra collector value in this kind of transitional piece. Am I correct in that?

It's not uncommon to find occasional overlap between engineering changes, especially the last few outgoing examples having elements associated with the upcoming series. Transitional is a good word for it.
Doesn't seem to affect collector value, usually.
As for the price, if the item is in the condition you describe -- which sounds to be NRA excellent-to-perfect, including box and papers (tools?) -- the price isn't unreasonable.

Model 10s were NEVER recessed! (except for maybe a few experimental guns chambered for .357 when they were pondering the Model 13).

A M10 was pinned until 1982. They were never recessed. That was only for Magnums and rimfires.
Sounds like a transition gun if not pinned though. Price does seem kinda high to me too.

Frame size doesn't matter. All magnum chambers, whether K or N were recessed until about the same time the barrel pin went away. Non magnum N frames (.38spl, .44spl, .45) were never recessed.

Oh I feel dumb. I should know that. I have 2 model 19's that are recessed.
and several M&P variants that are not.
