Default New to Me 629, 5"

I don't post much but I couldn't resist letting everyone see my latest purchase. It's a 629-6, 5" barrel. It's in excelent condition and looks to have been shot very little.
I've read much about the 5" barrel regarding the great balance and packability (is that a word?) and I've got to say it's the best balanced revolver I've had. I haven't shot it yet; hope to do so tomorrow pending good weather.
I will be removing the lock and getting the plug as I did that with another 629 (backpacker) that I recently got and I looks alot better than the hole. I've attached a couple of photos to satisfy the " if no photo, it didn't happen" requirement. Hopefully they turned out well.
Any info. on good loads for this would be appreciated.

Beautiful 629. I have owned a 4" & 6" & liked both but your 5" looks well balanced. It may be the best of all worlds. Hope you enjoy shooting it. Please could you tell me where to find a "plug" for replacing the lock?

Your gun looks like brand new.

I really like the balance and accuracy of my 629-6 5". The 5" full lug barrel weight isn't any big deal for me as far as packing all day goes either. The only reason I might like a 4" barrel better for is that for me I might be able to clear the holster faster with a 1 inch shorter barrel in a sudden bear encounter situation.

I did have a little harder time finding a good fitting holster for the 5" as most holsters are made for a 4" or 6"+ but found a Bianchi 5BL ( 3211 ) which is made for the N-frame 629 5". I didn't want a 6" holster for a 5" gun.

I'm looking (And counting pennies) to purchase a 629 in 5" barrel.
Let me know what you think firing at the range.

I'm concerned about recoil more than anything. I'd like to be able to fire of a box of .44 Magnum without destroying my wrist/arm/shoulder.

Default Took her to the range today.

I took it to the range today and this is by far the best shooter of the revolvers I have. Shot various distances from 10 to 30 yards and always had 3 to 4 inch groupings. If my eyes and body were 30 years younger I think this revolver could do better. Shooting 240 gr Jacketed with 15 gr of blue dot powder and have no problems with recoil at all. Very comfortable.

Magnus: Go to the accessories section and search for Bullseye or the plug. He (bullseye) sells the plug. If you don't like the lock this is the way to go.

I was swapping grips around recently and ended up with the SW 500 Hogue grip on my 629 5". In addition to filling the hand better (for me), they do a great job of shock absorption by covering the back strap.

Kinda hard to tell the difference between these and normal Hogues in this pic,

Talking

Congratulations as it's really hard to beat a 5 inch N frame for balance.

Do those grips fit older square butt 29's. I got a 4" nickled 29-2 with factory stocks, and can put about 12 rounds thru it and have to quit.

Lightbulb

The key to enjoying a 4" 44 magnum is either to shoot 44 Specials, or load your own.

I had been shooting the same load in 6 and 6 1/2" 44 magnums, which were NOT full power for about 20 years, and I could not believe how much MORE recoil the the 4" Model 29-2 has over the 29-2 in 6 1/2".

I started loading some of my 44 magnum ammunition JUST for my 4" 44 magnums.

Yes, I'm a wimp. But i's sure no fun getting beat up at the range.

Remington used to have a load they called the 'medium load for the 44 magnum. It was a 240 gr. bullet loaded to 1000FPS. Sadly, I believe this has been discontinued now, which I think is a shame. I shot some in my very first 44 magnum, and it was WAY nicer that the full power stuff!

If they had continued to load that, along with a 240gr JHP at 1000 FPS, I think they would have been decent selling ammunition. Lets face it: 44 magnum doesn't exactly jump off the shelf, but having a choice is always a good thing.

A factory load that delivered a 240 gr. JHP at 1000FPS would make a great PD or HD load for those who prefer the 44 magnum. Like I do.

Wrong Way :

The S&W tamer grips that cover the backstrap are for newer round butt revolvers.
