Last ditch for what? If you are in the woods a fear a bear attack and you must use a handgun, the 44 Mag is just fine(as fine as any handgun is going to be). If you mean the SHTF weapon(total break down of society a we know it), then some other handgun will be better. This scenario requires lots of ammo, which means light enough to carry. There is no sense in having so much ammo that all you can do is sit around and defend your pile. My choices would be:

1. A good 9mm semi auto, with lots of mags, ammo available and light.
2. If has to be a revolver a good one in .327 Magnum. Light ammo, reasonably light weapon, can be used effectively for survival or defense.
3. A good 38/357 Special revolver, ammo all over and reasonably light.
4. One of the Kel-Tec 22WMR semi autos, lots of 30 round mags, very light weight, can carry lots and lots of ammo, good for survival or defense.
5. If must be a revolver, 22WMR S&W 651, possibly a 22LR cylinder. Again, lots of ammo, and an effective weapon.
Anything larger than above brings in the problem of weight of ammo, availability of ammo, and other considerations.

The one downside to the pictured rig (anice set-up by the way) is reloading speed. Pulling single rounds out of a bandoleer is not the quickest way to get back in the fight. But if you're on target with light magnum rounds, there's probably not much need for a reload.

My last ditch handgun for reloading speed and stopping power is a SIG 220.

I can honestly say that I've never seen a rig like that before.

I may be way off base, but for both speed of reload and quantity of ammo, I think, personally, I'd do something in the area of speedloaders or speedstrips.

The 12 cartrdige slide is from my belt. I just happened to think it was very cool looking on the back, and might even keep it like this for fun.

I remember a month back someone had posted and asked what would be your gun if all hell broke out. The post came to mind as I reconfirgured this rig.

My last ditch and SD gun is the over-penetration 629 too. I know a 38 or 357 might be better but I don't have one, however I do have a 96a1 Beretta, and I still would pick my favorite shooter... S&W!

If the proverbial zombie apocalypse ever happens, I'll probably dawn a chest pack with 6 to 8 30 round AR mags, a Glock 19 with two extra mags, and all purpose pouch.
If I'm going to be stuck in the woods, it's going to be a 357 mag revolver with at least 18 extra rounds, on a shoulder holster.

Well it DEFINITELY looks COOL! It would get peoples' attention from ANY angle!

Did you mean that those were speedstrips on the belt? I need to get some of those speedstrips, people seem to like them and they're easier to carry sometimes that the speedloaders.

I'm thinking that my Governor may just be a good 'last ditch' gun to grab. It's easy-to-feed palate may just put it there. Grab some .45 ACPs in moonclips, .45 Schofields, .45 Colts, or even 2.5" shotgun shells and it's good to go. How do you top that for a 'universal' revolver? I have thousands of each of the .45 ACP's and .45 Colts, a couple hundred .45 Schofields, and some .410's. Even have a nice holster... Hmmmmm...

daa9mm: I wish for a 357 one day. It probably should have been my first, but it wasn't.

m3Stuart: The pouch has a speedstrip inside. The cartridge only holds bullets. I have speedloaders as well. Simply Rugged made the chest holster. They also have some kind of holder for speedloaders which attach to the belt.

Stainz: The .410 is so easy to handle. Love it.

I must have missed part 1. Are we talking about survival in a societal breakdown scenario,or something like being lost in the north woods for days with no comminications?

My first choice for the range is my revolver but with 5 Meth addicts in the house my first choice would probably be my 870 8 shot magazine shotgun loaded with OO Buck , Merely racking the slide is a warning shot IMO...
Second reach would be the the 14 shot .40 caliber handgun as a backup not a 6 shot revolver,

Last ditch gunS plural, M70 .30-06 with 100 rounds, a 4" 586 with 100 rounds, M&P45 with 100 rounds, set up on an ALICE H harness with first aid kit canteens and a kukri machete. I'm thinking I should make the wife carry the .45 and first aid kit.

In such a scenario, I'm holding a newly designed revolver called a Remington 870 Police Magnum 12 gauge pump. If all goes well, by 3:02am the five meth addicts will have been deterred from their ransacking, and law enforcement is on its way.

I think that I will just stick with my El Paso Saddlery tanker rig with a twelve round bandolier where I can actually reach it.

That shoulder strap on my rig comes off the shoulder as quick as a training bra.

The magnums are right there.
