Cool 640 Pro Series

Anyone have one of these yet? Is it accurate? How are 38+P's with the stock grips? There is one now at the local range for sale. 799$. Brand new of course. Is it a soft shooter? How do you like yours?

The MSRP of the 640 Pro, SKU #178044, is the same as my 632 Pro, SKU #178046, - $809. That's right - your shop discounted it $10... 1.2%. They should do better - at least pay the sales tax!

The basic 640, SKU #163690, has the same barrel length, SS construction, and fixed f & r sights - and MSPR's for $729. The biggest difference in a regular J-frame & the Pro variant is between the standard 3" 60 with adjustable sights - SKU #162430 & MSRP $759 and the 3" 60 Pro, SKU #178013, with it's better trigger, slabsided barrel, tritium Night Sight on front/adjustable rear sight, and neat wood grips - at MSRP $779! That's a lot for $20... the grips alone are $43 from S&W Accessories (I have them on my 632 Pro and other J-frames - nice feel.).

I had looked for the promised 632 Pro for over 18 months since it's announcement - it and the 640 Pro were 'in demand' when they came out. I didn't get a great deal - I was impatient just after last Labor Day when it arrived. I paid $703 including s/t and cc 'adjustment' (I told you I was impatient... it can be costly!). The novelty of 6 shots of .327 Fed Magnum got to me - the reality of little available ammo and reloading supplies hit home soon after I got there. The 640 Pro, in retrospect, looks pretty good... until I look at my very slightly larger 60 Pro - it's a better deal - even comes with those $43 grips!

If you get the 640 Pro, heed my experience-driven advice - use a 'combat targetting' approach. Put the front sight orb between the rear orbs and superimposed over the target. Also - recall that this is a protector - not a target gun or 'fun' plinker. It is sighted at 7 yd with some kind of .357 Magnum self defender round - call S&W for their suggestions. The beauty of the 60 Pro is that adjustable rear sight - you can set it for whatever you want to shoot in it. Both have great DA triggers - the 60 Pro is SA capable, too... just a thought!

PS My 632 Pro, like all of my S&W's purchased new, came as near perfect as a production firearm could be expected to arrive. The Pro series, in my experience, aren't far below the PC shop offerings I've purchased in the last two years in quality.

Just a quick follow up question. Can you shoot the 640 Pro without the moonclips?

Yes. Moonclipped .357M revolvers have a vestige of the original OAL of the cylinder present as an outter ring so that unclipped rimmed cartridges will headspace properly. Ex: my two PC 627 UDR's and 627 Pro.

The 640 Pro will load with Loose Rounds, Speed Strips, Speed Loaders, as well as Moon Clips.

The .025 Thick TK Moon clips do not seem to be terribly fragile.

TK is carrying a new Product, a California Competition Works Moon Clip Carrier made for J Frame 5 shot Moon Clips. They are a little pricey at $20 a pop, but will last a lifetime. I picked up 2 with my 10 PK of Moon Clips.
Welcome to TK Custom.com & Moonclips.com

A note on Ammunition and the Moon Clip 38 Special. All 38 Special Brass is not made exactly the same. Winchester will not work in .025 Moon Clips. The under cut is too narrow fo fit in a .025 thick moon clip.
Speer, Hornady, and Mag Tech will all work fine. Not sure about other brands of ammo.

The ability to reload with moon clips really makes the J Frame a much better carry option. Especially when the moon clip reloads are in the Moon Clip Carriers mentioned above for lightning fast access to your spare ammunition.

The 640 Pro comes with very good sights for a Carry Revolver also. I do not see any bad points for a Belt Carried small Revolver, other than the price being a little salty. For pocket carry it is a little too heavy in my opinion.
