Opinions on 66-6 **PICS ADDED**
Looking at a 66-6 product code 162720 it is a Davidson's special with a 3.25" barrel and factory Hi-viz front sight in a shop at $475.00 + tax. Anyone own one or familiar with them? I know has the lock and MIM parts and probably would never be collectable but seems like a good price for LNIB revolver with all the docs. I have committed to buying it so I guess not really looking at it. Your opinions please.
I was somewhat concerned about this purchase as it was sold by a local store but on GB and there were no other bids I knew it was not worth what the earlier 3" guns are worth but thought it was still a good value.

3.25" Model 66, with box and all docs, for $475. Even if you ignored the possible collector's value, I think you may have a hard time finding a 3" M66 shooter for that.
Shoot and enjoy as intended or put aside for later. Either way, it's hard to say what will be collectible in 10 or 20 years and the box, etc. just add to it.
Oh yeah, since you'll be buying it, will you PM me with a partial serial number, etc. for my CM list?

I don't know... my 6" 66-6 was only $350 NIB - with a scope rail included - from a TX mail order site. Of course, that was 9/2003!
Seriously, it sounds like a deal to me... unless it's beat up... a bunch! The price paid for a good revolver is soon forgotten. Sounds more than fair to me.
CDNN had some great deals then - got a 2" 10-11, also NIB, the same day - $280! S/H was $10 to my range's ffl... sigh! Dem were da days... hindsight...

You dint not get a steal on it, you paid around market value. I had one I sold like new in box for 550.00 2 months back but had an extra set of custom wood grips and bought it a year ago for 475.00 There will not be many people looking to purchase that gun since it has the internal lock and also the sights and mim parts.

In Eric's defense, he may be speaking from the same perspective as this 65 year-old. I wouldn't be in a big hurry to buy that gun either but the younger guys who weren't collecting and shooting Smith & Wessons "back in the day" don't mind lock holes in their guns and funny-looking sights. MIM parts aren't a deal-breaker for me on an unusual gun but I'd prefer to have forged.

Ed, I understand your and Eric's position If you read my OP I was aware of MIM and the lock I don't like them either and would prefer neither unfortunately S&W didn't ask my opinion before changing to MIM and the IL. But I don't live "Back in the day" I don't live looking in the rear view mirror. So do you guys only buy guns with the stainless rear sights? I have not shot the gun but the "funny looking sights" agree with me so far and if I don't like them both sights are easily changed. I also happen to like 8 shot cylinders I don't close my mind to things that are new or different just because they are new or different.

The only "new" gun I have is a 66-5 4", dates to about 1998/9. It is pre-lock, and does not have the two piece barrel, but does have the redesigned yoke, frame and lockwork, updated rear sights and tapped barrel, as well as internal firing pin and mim trigger (maybe hammer too). It's action is not noticably worse or better than my older 66's. I have several 66, 66-1, 66-2. It shoots just as good as them to be honest. I dont like the appearance of the MIM trigger to be honest with you, but it pulls the same as a forged one. I have put hundreds of rounds through it without incident.
I dont think I would own one with the lock, but I dont think some of the later pre-lock S&W's deserve as bad of a rap as they sometimes get. I think the late 90's pre-lock stuff is better quality than some of the mid 80's or late bangor punta stuff.

Tubby , I would buy that. it is a fine piece of equipment.
Notice how the 3.180" barrel is heavier than other model 66s?
It has the same barrel profile as a 3" model 65 , with adjustable sights.
Good find, good luck. Now go shoot it.

Big, I hear ya but you have to have some compassion for olde pharts like us who dislike changes to something that was so great in our experience.
Actually, I never cared much for the stainless rear sights - the black looks better to me. And you'll probably be surprised to hear that I'm not all hot over pinned and recessed, either - that went out not long after I became interested in and bought my first S&W back in the mid-70s.
I'm sure you'll enjoy your new gun!
