Kurac Ebony on a 629 5'' Classic......just fantastic!
I received these ebony grips from Kurac this past week and really couldn't be happier with them.
As a rule I favor wood grips over rubber by a wide margin. I shoot alot of .44Mag and feel that with proper fitting wood grips I shoot better and don't suffer any recoil side effects.
I searched high and low for 'Target' ish sized grips, for my XL hands, for the newer round butt frame to no avail. I contacted Kurac and he told me that he makes a 'Magnum' version grip which is bigger overall for larger hands.
I sourced some West African ebony and sent it to him a while back with the above hand/gun information.
What he delivered was this set with a palm swell and extra length that completely filled the bill, and my hand. These grips are so well made with all the attention to fit and finish one would expect from the finest of artisans. I told Kurac I may not shoot with these they are just so nice. But, that would spoil all the fun, so shoot I will.
629 Classic 5'' .44 Magnum, Kurac West African ebony grips with an added SDM FO sight.

Thanks alot Chris. The 'feel' of these grips is just great. The palm swell really distributes the pressure all throughout the hand.

James,
John Kurac is here on the forum, just type 'Kurac' in the search window and send him a PM. John is great to deal with and prompt in responses to questions and so forth. I supplied the stock for these grips so there was some adjustment in pricing so I'll just defer to him on the cost.

That is one nice revolver with a great set of grips. Where did you score the wood for him? The dark wood looks fantastic with the polished gun

Beautiful grips. I like the contrast of light stainless steel with the dark, dark of ebony... where both are hard surfaces, but one is smooth and one is smoother. And then there's that intense translucent red of the front sight. Excellent photography too documenting so many angles. Makes me wonder what Kurac could do with some African sable horn for grips. Anyone have any? C.B.

I sent him a PM and also searched his name. So far the only ones I see he makes are smooth grips. I would like to put the ebony grips on my 629 but with the finger grooves. I will wait for his reply to see what he says.

Thanks Am13,
There are a couple two or three resources for exotic hardwoods here in the NW. I was lucky and stumbled upon some pretty nice stock for these grips. Ebony is a bit of a gamble as it is known for its instability.

Now sable would be interesting. I have always had a fascination with this wood and am so happy to have it sporting my 629.
Thanks alot for the compliment on the photos. I was really trying to show the palm swell and the many other curves in these grips.

I couldn't agree more. I always thought the lighter woods looked best on dark guns.

I have only ever seen smooth grips by John but I also have not been around here for that long.

Kurac does spectacular work. Here is another set of his ebony RB to SB conversion N-frame stocks on a 629-6. Ebony on stainless is an unbeatable combination.
I like peppercorn's stocks a little better than these because the ones he has on his gun actually let the grain of the ebony show itself. So often ebony is finished to complete blackness (clarinets, oboes, original piano keys), and it is refreshing to see a subtler treatment of this dense wood.
To stress a point made above, one of the best things about Kurac's stocks is the huge palm swell he incorporates in his products. His stocks are in the best sense of the word "neo-cokes," and may actually have a little more swell to them than the factory's N-frame cokes of the 1950s and 1960s. That extra wood provides extra bearing surface for the shooter's hands, and recoil from heavy loads is perceptibly less.
My apologies to those who may have grown tired of seeing this photo so many times in the last few months. But as long as there are people who are unfamiliar with Kurac's work I'm going to keep posting it to try to drum up some business for him. He deserves it. His grips are first rate, and I just wish he made stocks that would fit on other guns in my safe. I'd love to get some large-swell K/L frame RB stocks to go on my 296 and some big recoil absorbing J-frame stocks for my 649.

What a winning combination! Keep posting it. And this one without the underlug is more to my preference - but to be fair, I've never shot a fully underlugged 29/629. A side by side comparison shoot off would be nice. C.B.

DCWilson,
Your gun was one that came up in my research so, in part, I have to thank you for sending me to Kurac in the first place.
Keep posting that picture, you just never know when someone may be in 'search' mode.

As I posted in another thread this morning, "That is a homerun!! The contrast in colors of the dark revolver with the light grips really stands out. Thanks for sharing." Just reverse the colors. Great looking gun.

That is a really nice P&R you have there. The grips look great on it.
They appear almost black, is it the lighting in the photo or are they in fact that dark?

They are that dark. I showed them to my dad and he thought they were painted because he had never seen ebony this dark and clear. You can see just the hint of grain on the back of the butt of the grips.

I'll bet they would look great on a nickled gun. Do you have to send your gun to him for fitting?

I agree, these would look great on nickel!
You do not have to send him your gun although when you put the grips on they will fit as if you had done just that.
Thanks for the comments everyone.

JCS&W,
Wow! That looks amazing.
Even the medallions jump out!
I may have to get a nickel gun now, to go with my Kuracs. How's that for rationalizing?! Well, plus the fact that I do not own a nickel revolver as of yet.
