My favorite LGS just had a 627-2 come through the door that neither the owner or I can identify through the usual sources including the SC of S&W.

Got an odd ball today. I checked in the Standard Catalog of S&W today, but no info. Guns that were close, but not the right product #'s.

S&W 627-2, 357mag, 5"bbl non-fluted cylinder with cursive writing on the barrel. Sn-CCU23XX. Patridge gold bead sight, Product code 148218 with Spec Ord #8218

The SC of S&W has product codes 148327 and 149140.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Call Lew Horton, give them the serial number and see if they claim it as one of those small runs of prototype or 'clean up' guns assembled from spare parts. Made in 1998 and could be as few as only 15 or less made.

The SCSW does not list every single model that went out the door especially 'over run' guns.

Is it the new frame w/frame mounted firing pin?
What does the laser script read?
6 or 8 shot?
Hogue grips?
Full lug barrel?
No Performance Center logo?

I have seen one. A guy at a local range has one. I have been looking for a 5 inch 627 for a good many years. If you don't want it, please let me know where it is.

Thanks

If you want one, you better jump on it fast

It was probably made August 6th 1998. I think you will find that it is from a small run made up of left over parts.

Many of these small parts runs were offered to large distributors like Lew Horton.

Congratulations on a great find. Those earlier 627s are hard to come by. There were a number of configurations offered between 1998 and 2001, 5-inch and 6-inch barrels, fluted and un-fluted cylinders, all 6-shot, all in the same general appearance as the original Model of 1989 which was a 5.5-inch barrel. These were among the last guns made on the older forged N-frame and were concurrent with the new CNC frame 627s produced by the Performance Center and marked 627-3. Many were shipped to Germany and barrel marked "Target Champion." I would love to add the full serial number to my data base if you would like to share via PM. Cheers!

I'm even more convinced it is a clean up/over run gun. few will ever see one or know what they saw if they did. They just come along so infrequently. I sometimes want to buy every one that I see just so I can say, look, these oddballs really do exist!

I look forward to the photos.

I have one i bought new in the late 90's I believe. It does have the frame mounted firing pin, 5 inch bbl, fluted 6 shot cylinder, with the script writing on the bbl. Product code is 148327 and serial number CCZ7320 Spec code 8016. This gun will shot one inch and less groups froma rest at 25 yds. Very accurate.

Photos of the 627-2- Reevolver now sold

Well fellow S&W fanatics and collectors, here are a couple of photos of the 627-2, 5 inch full lug bbl., non-fluted cyl. new model frame, laser marked .357 Magnum. Beautiful revolver. Alas, I was unable to purchase it and it is now sold to another very lucky S&W collector. Photographic proof that these guns do indeed exist!

Wow, after all that you did not end up with the gun? I sure hope a fellow forum reader did not buy it out from under you. Regardless, too bad.

Steamloco76 generously contacted me and offered me the opportunity to purchase this 627, for which I cannot thank him enough. Needless to say, I did not hesitate. I hope to have it sometime next week.

OK. I'm PO'd at the Post Office. The 627 arrived in KC, Kansas at Post Officer facility Tuesday night, departed this morning then processed back, it seems, if I am reading this right, into the facility at 10:38 am. No movement after that, no delivery to GS, even though it says it expected delivery today!! Now what?

I too hate waiting for delivery!
Hopefully it will be delivered tomorrow. I had the same thing happen with a gun shipped from Arkansas to PA. The package made it to the central hub for my LGS area and was marked out for delivery only to show as still at the hub at the end of the day. It was delivered to the LGS local PO the next day.

Beautiful gun. My favorite revolver is a 627-0 with a 5" barrel and a non-flute cylinder.

Must be the pictures but that looks more like a 4" barrel to me?

I guess I can settle down now, it arrived at gunshop today, will pick it up tomorrow morning. It was advertised as a 5 inch. I do not believe I have ever heard of a 4 inch 627-2.

The barrel is 5 inches, the non fluted cylinder looks longer than the standard fluted one making the barrel appear a bit short. If it was beside a 4 inch N frame you could see the difference.

NightOwl-glad to hear your new baby made it to the gun shop in time for the weekend.
