Round butt S&W 19, 4 inch?
Help...I've always wanted a Model 19 round butt 4 inch barrel. I've read that 19-7 have round butts. Any truth to this? Any idea how many of these were made? Could one have a round butt made from Sq. butt? Or would it be better (less expensive, easier to do) to find 4 inch barrel and screw into Model 19 2 & 1/2 revolver? Finally, would someone be willing to share with me the name of a gun smith who does good work on projects like this but doesn't have a 1 to 2 year wait list?
Thanks in advance for any info provided.

I have altered a number of square butt revolvers to round butt-Models 15, 19, 24-3, 25-5, and a couple of prewar M&Ps.
The first thing that must be established is the location of the serial number on the butt. It HAS to be somewhat centered on the butt or the conversion will remove part of the SN, which is a major violation of Federal, and most local, law.
The best way to check this is to buy a pair of round butt Magna grips and put on the revolver that is being considered for the RB conversion. You can use a sharp lead pencil to trace the outline.
It will remove some of the serrations on the front and back straps. This never made any difference to me.
The tools I used were a hacksaw, a bench grinder, some emory cloth for polishing, and a selection of files. A little cold blue can help blend the finish. You also need to deepen the strain screw recess and slightly shorten the strain screw itself.
Takes me about an hour to an hour and a half to do a RB conversion.

Generally I like round butts on 2" to 3" guns and square butts on 4" and larger. Just my personal preference of course.
YMMV

Some RB 4" 19's were made. I think the Navy had them but I know the FBI did. Agents were so taken with i that the armorers at Quantico would convert squarebutt 19's to round.

Correct. In the mid-70s the FBI issued 4" RB 19s to the field office SWAT teams. All I saw were stamped with NIS having come from Naval Investigative Services. Sweet handling pieces.

In the mid 70's I sent a 2 1/2" M-66 back to the Factory and had a 4" bbl installed. Carried that gun for a few years as my winter time off duty gun with a set of Farrant grips on it. Foolishly sold it to finance having a Colt Commander done by Austin Behlert.
Over the years I've seen a few other short 19/66's that had the 4" barrels installed. So I guess I wasn't the only guy who liked the idea.
Personaly I'd have the Factory do it.

19-7
I have a round barrel four inch 19 great gun.
If you rebarrel a 2.5 inch remember you need a longer shell extractor too.

WP, Here's a picture of my M-19-3. I round butted it myself except had my Smithy shorten the screw and redrill the hole. Please excuse the finger prints all over the gun, I took it out of my holster and shot the pic..........should have spruced it up a bit. I have relatively short fingers and am a big fan of the round butt K frames.

The most elegant way to accomplish what you want, apart from finding a RB Model 19 made that way at the factory is to get a 2 1/2 inch round butt, a 4 inch barrel and have THE FACTORY do the conversion. It requires the ejector rod parts, springs AND a new rear sight slide.

My 66-7 LE trade in (Australia I think) is a 4" HB (2 piece) Round Butt. It's beside me now, as it is every night.
I bought a 3"13 for my then finance`back when the FBI was issuing them... when we split up I offered to buy it from her but she refused. I consoled myself by buying a 3" 66-2 shortly there after... my duty gun at the time was a 4" 66-1 (square butt with butt ugly Hogue Monogrips but dang they work).
