Default The S&W action: a thing of beauty!

I was photographing a S&W revolver action for a friend in another state today, and I must admit that I have long admired the intricate and sturdy way it was originally designed and then modified and improved over the years since the first models in 1899.

This is a photo of the action of a special Model 64. It was given a custom high polish at the factory when it was made in 1994. Then it was retained by the S&W Marketing Manager for a number of years as a demonstration piece before being released for sale in 2001. It may possibly therefore be a unique piece. I only photographed it because it was handy at the time. At any rate, once more, I think the action of the modern S&W revolver is ingenious and beautiful. It's stood the test of time.

John

I agree it is a thing of beauty. Compared to the internals of a Colt revolver it is great. It always drives me nuts when I open up a Colt. No offense to my Colt buddies, but that's just the way it is.

Who ever designed the colt double action was drunk or insane or both, I could never understand why anyone would buy one when the smith is so much better

What I love best about the S&W action is that it lends itself to instant improvement with just a few minutes of smoothing and polishing, and the results can be dramatic. I've done around a hundred S&W trigger jobs for friends, co-workers and family, and some made a little difference, but some made a lot, and all of them are a joy to shoot. The S&W lockwork reminds me of a good watch.
