Info: 1984 Model 686 no dash, AFP Serial Number - Found w/ PICS
I am going to be trading my 4506 for an 4" 686 today with a serial number of AFP23xx. I was hoping there might be someone on here with another 1984 Model 686 that could show me the original grips, box, paperwork, cleaning kit, anything. I want to try to acquire the original items for my collection. Any info on a a serial number wouldhelp as well, per S&W, it is 1984 / 1985.
Right now, it has some finger grooved Pachmayer grips that are supposed to be period correct but I belive are not original.
Thanks in advance.
-Bryan

Mine has an "ADW" prefix and I bought it used without the box and goodies, so I can't help you there. But below are two photos of a Model 66-2 I bought with everything. I think that what a 686-0 came with should be the same as I have the 686-3 Classic Hunter and it came with the same box, etc.

Congrats on the acquisition, I'm sure you are going to love it!
My 4" 686 / SN AFP99XX came to me, w/ no box or tools, but wearing a set of targets of the same style shown by Average Ed. They are stamp dated February 27, 1985. Not sure if they are original.
Made arrangements this morning, to send it in for the L frame "M" update.
Sorry for the crummy pics...

My 686 no dash with AAF serial number dates to 1982, here are the original box, papers, and tools. Note that there are two different Safety Instruction brochures (probably an overlap and the packer grabbed one of each). Also note that the Holster brochure is for a K Frame (the L Frame was so new that they probably didn't have a Holster brochure for them yet). The tool kit is four (4) pieces consisting of a rod, mop, brush, and screwdriver. The correct grips were checkered Goncalo Alves target stocks with speedloader cutout. Hope this helps.
