What is this gun? Female needs help!
This is a .38 special revolver. It has "CDC" stamped on the left side below the cylinder. It has a ring on the butt of the grips. The model is a 64-3. s/n ANB17XX. The man who sold it to me said it was a Colorado Department of Corrections issued gun. The ring is for a belt lanyard. What's true? What's it worth? Thanks!!!

Welcome! There are many model 64s currently on the market, mostly with 2" barrels, that are surplus from the California Department of Corrections and are in the $400 price range. CDC could stand for many other agencies, however. The ANB prefix means it probably shipped in 1986.
I have not seen one with a lanyard ring but these are easily installed; one clue as to if it is original is the serial number on an aftermarket addition usually goes through the stamped serial number. Hope this is helpful.

Thanks! Yes, the ring does go through the s/n on the base of the grips. So if I'm reading this correctly, the ring is aftermarket. Yes, the CDC could certainly stand for different agencies. That makes sense. The $400 price is on target too. Looking forward to learning more in this forum! Thanks again!

Again, welcome to the forum! Yes, what you have is a fairly common service style revolver... basically the stainless version of the old Military and Police that was the mainstay of the S&W line for decades. Assuming it is in good shape (as most guns that were carried a lot and shot very little like many of these were) you should get many years of shooting enjoyment from it. Congratulations on getting a great start in the world of Smith & Wesson.
Regards,
Froggie

Welcome to the forum! I would caution you on buying a handgun where the serial number was modified after market. Unless the serial number is also stamped elsewhere on the frame (the 64 should have it under the cylinder yoke, but check to make sure it is the same as the one on the butt) there could be trouble. I passed on a nice transitional M&P recently because of the same thing.

Keep your bill of sale and enjoy this classic. Great guns, kept the doors at S&W open for decades. Lots of leather and accessoriesfor this 64 at good prices.
They are also very accurate and are +P rated. It's a workhorse!
