I'm occasionally seeing a little spark through the cylinder when dry-firing my 642, although it doesn't happen all the time. The firing pin must be hitting something, but when I open her up I can't see anything.

I'm concerned I might be damaging my firing pin or something.

It's normal, nothing to worry about. You can dry fire with snap caps if you are concerned about the firing pin.

Don't sweat it. My M340PD does that too. S&W made 'em that way so if you are in a survival situation you can start a signal fire....or light a cigarette.
Sorry that last part was probably TOTALLY politically incorrect.;)

Really? Normal? I've never seen any of my guns spark when dry firing, even in the total dark. IDK, maybe some do, but I've never seen it. The thing is though, when a spark is created, metal is being lost somewhere. Maybe not a lot, and maybe it will never really cause any harm, but it can't be a good thing. Maybe it's just a new gun thing where the FP is mating to the bushing and will abate in time as things wear together. Now I gotta go check all mine in a darkened room! :-/
