Needed advice of 629-6 purchase

My LGS has a 4", 629-6 Mountain Gun with IL in like new condition but without the box. The asking price is $650. Bit on the high-side?

It's a very handsome revolver by I'm a bit apprehensive about the IL due to the negative exposure here, on the forum.

I have a 6.5" classic 629-4 and a Marlin 1894P in .44 mag. Other than enjoying the caliber range I thought it would be nice to round out my barrel length options.

Looking for views on IL reliability issues and a fair price.

I just paid $549 a few months ago for a 629-3 six inch. great condition, no box. Hope this helps.

If I wanted one and it was in pristine condition, I would pony up the $650. I saw a used (albeit perfect condition) ILS 629 4 inch for sale at the LGS for $700.

As for the ILS, I can only speak from experience.

I owned (and shot) an ILS 686 snub for years and it never gave me any problems whatsoever.

I have a bunch of 629-6's, also a pair of 329's, some of these guns have thousands of rounds through them with no issues, the lock and mim parts are a non issue in my experience , it would be nice if they were not there but they are, if you can get past the lock and cast parts the -6's will make you great shooters

$650 is a respectable price for a 629-6 Mountain Gun. I paid that much a while back for my 629-6 Classic and haven't regretted it one bit.

What are MIM parts?

MIM stands for metal injection molding, basically its a less expensive way of making parts then forging, with MIM you have a mold of say a hammer, it filled with liquid metal when it cools and comes out of the mold it ready to be put in a gun, the more expensive way to do it is you have a solid piece of steel that's bigger then the part you need and you machine away every thing that is not a hammer, that is the best I can do, I'm not a machinest and my fingers are tired

Hey, I love my 629 I bought new in box last summer... it has an incredibly smooth action, great balance, hits well and is very packable. If it will make you feel better, I'll sell you my box for $350 and we can practically trade places. I don't think that blue plastic box is nearly as sturdy as the older gray plastic Ruger boxes though. Clean Break.

Thought I'd see more with the ILS. Most folks do seem to shy from it.

I have two 625MG's in .45 Colt... and had a 629MG, now have a 629-6 4" standard .44 Magnum - and just wish such a choice was available for the 625MGs! Seriously - a regular production 4" 629 only weighs two ounces more - and it's out front, in the non-tapered barrel - keeps the muzzle down a bit better in recoil. Also, it has both a larger trigger and hammer, as well as an OR front and white outline rear sight - a faster to acquire sight picture than the MG's black/black sights.

BTW, 8/05 found me buying a NIB 6" 629-6, off the shelf locally, for $589 + s/t. The next year found me trading my failed 629MG and some moola for a 4" production 629-6 - direct from S&W. They were first rate in their offer - my MG's destruction was on me. The point is simple. The MG was a .44 Special/Russian launcher - until I added the Hogue/S&W .500 Magnum monogrip - then it became a real .44 Magnum - with significant muzzle rise. I installed a pair on the 6" 629 when it arrived - a great aid there, too. The point is simple - the grips helped - but the added weight out front - in the 6" or 4" regular production - keeps the .44 Magnum flip down in comparison to the MG.

As to prices today... I wouldn't sell either of my 629-6's, the 4" or 6", for $650! Additionally, it has been years since a 629MG was produced, so, if you really want it - and it's in nice shape - grab it, box or not! Got my 629-4 off Gunbroker for $625 in pristine condition complete with blue box and all the papers. There seems to be a lot of used 629s floating around out there w/o the IL and MIM parts. Proud of mine.

I gave $650 for mine with S&W box, all the paperwork, a fit like a glove De Santis holster.
It was LNIB and I didn't mind paying the price.
I am really happy with this 629-6 and I love it.

If the ILS really bothers you, then take it out. There are several videos on YouTube that will show you how. It is really pretty simple.
