Tyler T-grip repair for 'Ole Ugly 940 (Photo thread)

Drama! Years of carry and heavy recoil finally detatched the T-grip from the 940.


Sorry about the huge uncropped photos, but I'm trying to stay on the old Photobucket format as long as possible!


The adaptor is retained only by a riveted on 0.010" copper strip with a reinforcing plate of dead soft stainless steel (barely magnetic):



Quick solution? Robbed the grips off the new 340 M&P!

Then commenced to peening back the edges of the cast in stud on the back of the grip adaptor. Eventually the plate and strap could be worked off the stud. Cleaned up the stud and flattened the cast pad surrounding it in order to seat the new strap a tiny bit deeper. No copper, but some 0.010" brass sheet was handy, so it was cut to size, bent with some parallel jaw pliers and then the center hole was drilled and then filed to a snug fit over the stud. However, re-riveting the assembly (including the reinforcing plate) proved troublesome until a sleeved driver was quickly modded to fit in between the strap legs. The outer portion was used to drive the sheet metal well against the casting, and then whilst maintaining pressure on the works, the inner drill rod riveting shaft was inserted and lightly hammered to indent the top of the stud.





Seems to do the job! (Had the stud failed to be usable, the next option was going to be drilling through the adaptor and using an actual rivet.)

Acraglas gel would be my choice after some annoying JBweld failures. But this way there's less chance of surprises. Duplicating what's worked well enough so far seems safe. This is THE everyday carry weapon, after all.

Jay, when I repaired one damaged the same way yours was, I harvested the spring steel clip from an old busted Pachmayr adapter to put on the Tyler. These clips are a bit better than the thin copper tabs. Anyway, I filed down the old rivet, laid down a thin bed of JB Weld, sunk the new clip into the JB and then applied more JB over the clip to bury it sandwiched in place (the clip has a hole at center for a screw but we're basically creating a new large JB Weld rivet doing it this way). This adapter isn't used on a carry gun but the repair seems solid and I've no doubt it would perform as expected.

Wow, that's one rough looking 940! When you repair the grip, make sure you don't go out of your way to make it look pretty. Kind of like the "battlefield pickup" of the revolver world.

It HAS had a rough life! Didn't clean up the outside of the adaptor but the inside got a good scrubbing to remove some nasty looking gunk. (Which makes it more in line with the revolver- Muugly on the outside and sanitary on the inside.)
