Hi everyone. Thought I would introduce myself. I'm not new to guns or S&W, but have never ventured out of J-frame snubby land. The two guns I currently own are a Model 60-3 I bought new in '89 (still have box & papers) and a newer Model 442-1 no-lock, which is my everyday carry. Both are great guns, but the 442 is not a lot of fun at the range. The 60, although not a safe queen doesn't get shot as frequently as it used to.
I decided yesterday to pick up this .357 Model 686-6 with 4" barrel for the nightstand and range. They have become hard to get in the Pittsburgh area. I've read a lot recently on how S&W's quality is suffering these days....that has not been my experience. Fit, finish could not be better and trigger action is excellent. Used some snap caps when I brought it home. After dry firing about 50 times, double action is very smooth (but a little heavy to me) and single action is perfect out of the box.
Took it to the range today and all I can say is it was a pure pleasure to shoot. Especially compared with my beloved J-frames. I went through 50 rounds of .38 special and 50 rounds of full load .357 with 158 grain bullets. The gun feels very well balanced in my hands and sight acquisition is quick with the 4" barrel. Accurate (better gun than I am a shooter) and comfortable enough with the .357 to shoot all day. Cleaned her up at home after the range and used some Mothers Mag polish to add a little shine everywhere but the top strap.
I may look at replacing the grips to take advantage of the round butt frame hidden under the stock conversion grips. Any suggestions are welcome.
