Why is it you seldom see K frame round butt target grips?
Are the that rare or expensive?

Primarily because the round butt was standard on only the 2 1/2" 19 and 66, which were considered primarily hideout guns, and the grip is the most difficult part of the gun to conceal. The 4" and 6" guns (especially the latter) were far more popular for target use, and they came with square butts (at least before S&W inexplicably went to round butts on all their guns sometime during the 1990s).

S&W's K frame round butt target stocks were standard on very few guns; I can, off of the top of my head, only think of the Model 547. Relatively few shooters are aware of them. The smooth ones are my favorite round butt K frame grips, and I have them on several of my guns, including a 3 inch Model 66-2 since I bought it in 1985. Bigger than the magnas in just the right places to make it more comfortable to shoot with 'big' ammo, still small enough for concealment.

I have a 1981 vintage Model 10-8 with the 4 inch heavy barrel and round butt that came with round butt target stocks (banana shape). The box is marked TR for Target Round. These stocks were not standard for Model 10s, but some guns were shipped with them - probably as a special order.

Hope this helps.

Nyteman44 still has 3 sets of smooth K frame targets for sale in his ad. I bought 3 sets from him and I'm very pleased with them.

Here's a couple of pair I got from him.

As 310pilot stated, the round butt was designed for concealment and not intended as a target gun.

I AGREE WITH 310Pilot. THE CHANGE TO ALL ROUND BUTTS COULD HAVE ONLY BEEN PROMPTED BY THE DESIRE TO SAVE MANUFACTURING COSTS. THE MOVE TO THE --IMHO--UGLY FINGER GROOVE GRIPS WAS DONE FOR THE SAME REASON. I REMEDY THE PROBLEM WITH AHRENDS SMOOTH TACTICAL CONVERSION GRIPS. I ACTUALLY LIKE THESE BETTER THAN THE SCARCE S&W SMOOTH TARGETS. I KEEP THE TARGETS ON ANY SQUARE BUTT S&Ws THAT I PURCHASE--SOMETIMES HAVING THEM REFINISHED. I DON'T CARE FOR S&W COMBATS EITHER. I LIKE THE LOOK, BUT THEY ARE BULKY AND DON'T FIT MY HAND WELL. I PREFER MAGNA PC GRIPS WITH A TYLER-T ADAPTER, AS SHOWN ON MY 686+ SNUBBY BELOW…...…..

Theyre awesome grips. Have two checkered in decent shape and one smooth pair in pristine shape I'm saving for "that special" Smith not yet purchased.

I've been waching out for a pair of these for a while. They seem to be skyrocketing in price, so when I saw this pair which were 'reasonably' priced I grabbed them. They fit my hand perfectly. Here they are on my 686-2.

I have a smooth pair too which are darker in grain. Those are tucked away. ;)

Altamont Company (click here to activate the link) makes some very nice "round to square conversion grips".

Here's a set on one of mine...

And these are also available in Walnut or Black Laminate colors too, with some other styles available too. Take a look.

Even with the S&W Medallions added, plus shipping, the total cost is very reasonable -- and the workmanship and quality of the grips (or "stocks" as S&W calls them) is SUPERB!

Tight groups.

My 66-1 with RB targets. Bought them from a fellow forum member, they are not as common as most other factory stocks but they do come up for sale occasionally.
