Default S&W 66-3 Wolff type 2 mainspring

I have a 66-3 on layaway. It will be used mainly for a steel plate match and maybe some other competition when I get a chance. I installed the Wolff type 1 standard powrr in my 617 and after learning the trick to adjusting it,thanks Stainz, I love it. I went with the type1 on the 617 because Wolff technical support recommended it due to the finicky nature of rimfire cartridges. I am well pleased with the results so I plan to install the Wolff springs in the 66 as soon as it comes home. I already have an extra set screw ready. My question is for the guys who have used the type 2 mainspring do you have to use match primers? I know it will make it more sensitove to primers but will I be limited to match primers or maybe certain brands. I haveheard Federas tend to be a little easier to set off. I try to buy only Federal primers now but with the current market Ibuy what is availible. I will have adjustability with the screw I am using but if I have to adjust it too far I might as well use a type 1. What has worked for you guys? Thanks.

I have to use Federal small pistol primers to get reliable ignition in my mod 66 set up with the strutted mainspring. My double action trigger pull is about 7#. I use that one only for competition, and I set it for 100% reliability instead of as light as it would usually work.

If I use a different primer or leave a primer slightly high, it does not fire. Match primers are no better than standard for Steel, IDPA or USPSA. You don't need ultimate uniformity, just the most sensitive: Federal small pistol.

P.S. The action needs to be slick as glass and lubed with something light like Remoil to effectively use the light spring. Just dropping the light spring in without good action work is usually a problem.
Suggest the Miculek revolver DVD for details.

I have the type 2s in quite a few CF revolvers.
While they all run fine with Federal primers, at times some of them have stumbled on other brands or factory loads.
Has not happened enough to the point that I tried to quantify it, however.
Gurss I'll learn more about this when (if?) my cache of Federals ever runs out.
My RF guns all have the stock springs, BTW.

I have the type 2 in all my K frames.

Any misfire problems were resolved, by using an RCBS hand primer tool.

It seats the primers to the BOTTOM of the pocket. Great sensitive feel. And I use CCI primers.

I hand prime as well. I am much more consistent than priming with the press. Even with full power springs I found out the hard way a high primer will not fire.
