Model 640 Gold
These were factory revolvers with gold (titanium nitride) hammer, cylinder thumb piece, ejector rod and trigger. Produced for TALO in 2001. Rosewood finger groove laminate boot grips. Approximately 300 made of each. The advertisement for Talo special limited edition firearms suggests that these commemorated the 50 year anniversary of the Centennial style revolver.
I have the opportunity to purchase one of the 640's that is in good shape without the box, paperwork, etc. Any ideas if this revolver is worth more, less, or the same as a comparable 640-3. Also any opinions related to the appearance of the gold accents and wooden grips. The one available has the rosewood (as shown on the model 36) instead of the silver/black grips.

Everybody has his/her personal opinion, but these guns like this (Taurus makes a lot of guns trimmed in gold).....has pimp-gun written all over it. JMHO. The ladies seem to like those gold trimmed Taurus guns though.

Yep,
One of those with the gold accents would be worth far less than a standard version to me,at least the $$ it would cost to replace the tacky gold parts with standard parts.

I know what ya'll mean regarding "pimp-gun" and "tacky gold parts'. I normally do not like flashy things, especially guns but something about the stainless, gold, and rosewood on this piece speaks to me. I have removed the thumbpiece, thumbpiece screw, and extractor rod and temporality replaced them with stainless from another gun just to see how it looks with only the gold trigger (like some Brownings). I like the way it looks with these mods, it tones down the gold accents but still keeps the stainless, gold, rosewood theme. I can get these replacement parts and still be in it for just over $400.

When you ask for opinions....you usually get what you ask for and everybody has one.
Don't let others like us change your mind and if that is what you want and can wind-up with around $400 in it....you'll be doing good. Have you looked on Gunpoker lately for just about any SS J-Frame? Last year I was buying these for around $350-$400 and selling them for $400-$500 ($600 on the magnums). The current panic has lit the fuse under just about anything that shoots. If I could get that gun and have $400 in it...I'd do it....if it were a NL.

That is a nice looking revolver,$400 sounds like a bargain,$30 or so will buy ya a case hardened trigger from Smith and Wesson.

Very few, if any, IL models will have values above their non-IL counterparts. As to the pictured pair, I'm sure they shoot and carry well, but I see no premium price associated with either. Personally, I would look for a non-IL version of each before going with the IL. But $400 is a good deal for a dependable J-frame, and for an additional $25, you can purchase the plug, and perform the de-locking procedure.
