One big snubbie
629 -- recent addition.
Shoots very nicely.
I've only had it to the range a couple times as it's a recent purchase.
2 1/2 barrel, ported.
My first attempt to add a picture -- hope it works.

Yes, it has "Backpacker" on the barrel on the other side.

Nice. My local store has one of these that I've looked at. Not sure what you paid but theirs is listed in the $850 range.

I like it. If you miss at least you can burn them with the flame. Seriously, with some combat style grips and specials that would make a great carry piece if you can handle the weight.

I've shot mostly 44 Special in it so far.
The recoil from 44 Specials is very mild.
I recently bought 4 boxes of 44 Russian from midway as that was all they had.
I'll give those a try soon. Should be similar to Specials.
BTW, for the other poster that asked, I also paid $850 about three months ago.

Surprisingly, .44 Mag isn't as bad as you might think, noise and recoil-wise. My 3" barreled version is not even ported. Pretty much the same as a 4".

You want a BIG snubbie? Find yourself a S&W 500 shorty. It will make that 629 seem like a pellet gun.

I've looked at pg 260 of SCSW trying to specifically ID Cal 44's gun and cannot. The recent 2.5" PC 629s have the front ball detent lockup; Cal .44's 2.5" gun seems to have the standard front S&W lockup. Also, there is some sort of design on the cylinder.
Can anyone out there help to identify the production variation (variant?) of this super-cool gun? Would love to have one. Thanks in advance.

There are a few of these for sale at on-line gun sites. Search for "Backpacker 629" and you will probably find one.
I can't find anything on the S&W site about this gun.
The designs on the cylinder are bear footprints. There is a small grizzly bear head laser etched on the other side of the gun you can't see in the picture. I'll get the gun back out and take a photo of the other side at some point soon.

Thinking it was a Big Rock Sports special run but I'm having trouble finding a SKU. It was one that I was considering when searching for a 629 snub. I went with the slab-side PC model instead and couldn't be happier.
Nice gun there!

I just bought a PC 629-5 Defensive Revolver with 2 5/8" barrel. There is no lock and I was astonished to find no MIM parts! The previous owner never fired so much as a single round through it (must've been afraid of it) and I got it for a steal. This is the first PC revolver I have seen that actually lives up to expectations. Out of the box it needs nothing except maybe a de-spurred hammer. I would prefer the fluted cylinder and round barrel with short lug but I'm still very happy with what I have. My 629-2 Mountain Gun is pretty abusive to shoot so I'm anxious to see how the shorter barrel compares. I never was a huge fan of the .44 Magnum and now I have two of them.

A friend of mine (FFL) came across a used Bear Paw Special a couple months back, and gave me a call. Nice revolver, no problem with the graphics, but I've got the .44 bases covered with a 696, 624, 629, and 29. I wouldn't hesitate to pick one up if I had a need for it.

Not a lot of difference.
The Backpacker has a shorter barrel -- 2.5".
Full lower lug on barrel.
The TB has a ramp front sight. The Backpacker has a fiber optic sight.
Note the front sight on my Backpacker is pinned, so it would be easy to change it if you wanted to. But I like the sight as is.
The Backpacker has a rounded butt grip frame, so you could change the grip to combat grips or something smaller than the Hogue it comes with.

I'm sorry for bringing up this old thread,
But I think I found out how to make a thumbnail image into a big image and needed to try it:
[/QUOTE]
So I tried in on one of my own posts.
Now I don't need to use any of those on-line image hosting sites like photobucket.
It works!

Actually you did upload your image to a hosting service. You uploaded it to this Forum.
Then you used the hosted location of the file as the source to display.

Right.
That is exactly what I did.
Saves bothering with another site.
Sorry if I'm just stating obvious things everyone else knows.

It must depend on the person.
I've had friends who shoot a .500 often shoot Harry (M29 of course ), and set it down and say they never want to touch it again
If you really want to get your *** kicked, try a M329PD All 25 ounces of it!

Nope. Not gonna do it! I think my fling with Aluminum/Scandium alloy framed handguns is about done (again). It's fine for AR rifles, but I just don't like it for revolvers or pistols. Steel and/or "polymer" for me.

Very nice!
I just picked up a big snubby last week. A friend from out of town came to visit, with the intent to trade me out of the SP101 I got from him years ago. He knew exactly what to offer, a Super Redhawk that had the barrel bobbed to 2.75".
I know, not as classy as a 629. I have a 6" 629-4 that seems graceful in comparison. It's a brute, made for business.
The groups were offhand at 10 yards, 6 oclock hold. They were some handloads I put together for a Super Blackhawk a few years ago. I wasn't unhappy with the initial testing, it shouldn't take long to figure out exactly what it likes.
