Was wondering if anyone knows how many were made....The Book states they were made in 2003 for Bangers Distributors but no approximate number given.

Anyone have one?

Thanks...Bob

Never seen one, but you can bet if I do I'll pay the price for one.
But there is another side to this, if you own a S&W 686 you may try to slide a 38 super into the cylinder.
If it extracts the round, you can shoot it.
I have 2 60-14's and one 686 that I regurally shoot 38 supers in.
So in reality every 686 is a 38 super shooter if the ejector grabs the shell.
I've put several hundred rounds in 38 super down range in mine.
I have a friend that shoots 38 supers in his Marlin 1992 lever gun.

I am picking one up next week. According to the owner, who seemed very knowledgeable there were 300 made by the performance center, additionally 9mm works well in the moon clips for practice.

Thanks so much for the information....

S-WLover...yes, I have fired .38 Super in a S&W Model 36 and a 60. But so far only Winchester will chamber. I also understand there is also another brand that will also work.

S&Wafficionado..thanks for the numbers. I could not remember if it was 250 or 300...I knew it wasn't 500.

I own two of them. Have never tried 9mm nor 9x23 in either gun as I have quite a bit of Super brass. That said the 686s do not like most brass that has been fired through a semi-auto. I lucked into a bag of 500 Starline cases and just make sure they don't get mixed up with any other brass when Supers go into the tumbler.

Here is my #1...have never taken a picture of #2...

Also had one of the 627 pin guns but I just never shot it as accurately or fast as the 686 so when I found the second 686 I sold the 627...

One of these days I'm going to have them lettered....

What is your best guess on value of the 686-7?

Just want to make sure I am buying right as it certainly isn't cheap!

I believe 9 mm brass is wider than .357/.38 brass.

Chambers need to be cut to accommodate 9 mm.

When you try to insert 9 mm into a chamber, it will stop halfway in.

There was a secondrun of them about 3 years ago.
The original ones have the grip screw on the bottom of the grip.
The second run has the grip screw going thru the side of the grip. Like the original targets, just in a one piece grip.

I am not aware of any factory made S&W .38 Super revolver that will chamber 9mm without some kind of modifications. These "modifications" entail removing steel from somewhere on the cylinder. Think long and hard about the consequences of that before you start cutting on your cylinder.

Also, I believe every .38 Super revolver made is useless without moonclips. The .38 Super has a "semi rim" and a properly made .38 Super revolver should be able to fire and extract without moonclips.

Do they use a .355" or .357" barrel? You will need to know this, especially if the cylinder throats come in at .355" or smaller.

Just some things to consider.

There was a second run of the 627s but not the 686s as far as I know...

Have not shot my guns that much and will hopefully pull them out soon and see if 9mm or 9x23 will fit...I doubt it however as .38 Super brass that has been fired through a semi-auto won't even chamber after being resized...

...so have you picked yours up yet?? And no not cheap at all...the last two 686s I saw for sale were in the $1500 range. The 627s were a little less money...I know mine sold for $1350 and that was at least three years ago...

I have also heard (and read) that Winchester Silver-Tip 38-Super will chamber and fire in a 686. I have a couple of brands of 38-Super that WILL NOT chamber. I would suspect that Winchester produces a round that is on the lower-end of the SAAMI spec. and will fit. I have no reason to doubt what these people are saying......just have not ran across any Winchester to purchase and try yet and don't want to bother with trying to order any.

One may ask....why you would want to do this, but I have always liked the idea of having ammunition that I can fire in multiple guns. If you have a 38-Super semi-auto, the perfect compliment would be a revolver that would chamber and fire the round as well. I have 9MM autos and a 9MM revolver, so it's the same idea.

Yes, Winchester ST will run in .357/.38 Special chambered guns. I have shot them in a Model 36 and a .357 Magnum but don't recall which one. I may have some standard Winchester around here somewhere and will test it out. I have read that there is also one other brand that will chamber in .357s also but can not remember which one...it was a forign brand.

The Winchester ST doesn't chamber in my M&P 360, sticks halfway. But Aguila .38 Super will.

Both are straight-wall cases and the Super has a small rim. The case diameter of the .357 per SAAMI is .379 and .384 for the Super. I can see where tolerances would stack +- among ammo and chambers to allow the Super to fit. Case length would not be an issue.

I have never had a problem with 9x23 brass or 38 brass or .38 super brass or .357 brass being interchangable as far as diameter is concerned. The gun may be modified to accept the length differences with no problem.

Sorry, haven't checked this thread for awhile, and 1500 is what is being asked with ammo, but with the current prices and the scarcity of this model, I think I will bite, don't think I will lose....

I shoot 38 supers in my 66 and 686 without problems. Only thing is SW chambers vary greatly. Some 38 supers will fit just fine, most as previously stated will not go all the way in. On rare occasions the primers will not strike properly, but this is almost not worth mentioning as it is so rare. Its a great round to shoot with it being between 38 special and 357 mag.

S&Wafficionado...so did we "pull the trigger"??

One of the reason that .38 Super will misfire once in a while in some guns is headspace.... The rim thickness of the Super is just a little less than the .38/.357 so the firing pin has a little further to go before contacting the primer...
