Default 1983 dated Model 36 for $350

I am meeting a gentleman in the morning to look at a Model 36 that he said was dated around 1983. Seems like it's a pretty good deal to me. Anything I should look at? I've never had one of these, but have wanted a J frame for a while. Have a couple 686 and a 639, so a snubby seems like the next logical step.

Here's a pic of it, what do you guys think?

350.00 seems to be close in value with the rubber grips if it locks up tight and has a good barrel gap an no push off of hammer.
It is had to see condition in the dark picture.

No original stocks, said he didn't like them and gave them away. I even found the posting where he gave them away :-(

If the hammer and trigger surfaces have been altered too aggressively for a light single action pull, the hammer can release if it is pushed forward at full cock. A dangerous situation by itself or the gun is dropped.

I would buy that model 36 for that price. I have seen several that are going for $400-$500 here in NC. They are getting harder to find. The model 36 classic series is running like $600. The great thing about that model 36 is the fact that it does not have the IL.

thanks for the info, I spoke to him earlier tonight and we decided that $325 would buy it, so hopefully it will be in my hands tomorrow. I'll be sure to post pics :-)

The Pachmayr Compac grips aren't nearly as pretty as magnas and a T-Grip, but you'll find they are very comfortable for shooting +P ammo and give a good high hold on the backstrap.

This is true, I like wood grips but like my hands not to hurt more.....

That 36 looks to be in pretty good shape, a bit of a turn line but no blue wear that I can see. I'd snap it up in a heartbeat for $325. I have two 36's, both with some blue wear, and I paid $325 & $350 respectively about a year ago. Bought three model 60's fairly recently for $400 or $425 each. There are three local gun-for-sale websites which are full of guns for sale, but I rarely see a j-frame listed. A pinned-barrel model 36 with imitation stag magnas & a hunter holster just came up on one of them- priced at $460. I emailed & said I was interested but he was about 100 too high. He dropped to 400, & sent me pics-- looked like lots of holster wear on the finish. I offered 350 for the whole works but he wouldn't come down from 400 so I passed.
FWIW my favorite grips for the RB j-frame are the uncle mike boots. Out of production but S&W still has them for about $22 delivered.

OK guys, thanks for the help. I picked it up yesterday, it's really nice and tight. And since you all really like pic's, here is a bunch of them

Feel free to look thru the entire library and let me know your thoughts.

Now all I need to do is find some original grips. If anyone knows where I could get them, please let me know.

Eric

You can get new magna grips from S&W that mostly look right but they're made of Diamondwood which is a ply. At least they're genuine S&W. Ebay sells lots of imports but if you keep scanning around you'll find some correct vintage grips here or ebay or some of the other sites.

echap (0P)...I know many on here will tell you to get the original stocks, maybe with a t-grip add-on, but shoot the Mod-36 with the pachmayr's...in my experience the pach's are more comfortable to shoot with. My motto is "wood for show & rubber for go".

I put the most comfortable stocks on for shooting/carrying and put the correct wood stocks on if I want the gun to look "pretty" when showing it off to others....JMO of course.
