Default Need quick advice on a Model 29

Was at a gunshow today and saw a model 29-4 that was with a 3" barrel. The seller said it was very rare. Anyway, I cannot find anything that says they made a 3" model 29. I will be back there tomorrow to look at it again. Is there a chance that this could be a 'real' 3" gun? What should I be looking for to see if this is a modified pistol? I know this is short notice, but this will be the last chance to see it or have the opportunity to buy it.

I believe that the answer you are requesting is going to require a Roy Jink's letter.

If the workmanship looks a bit "off" on the crown or front sight, it was probably a cut-off.

Was the price good for a shooter? If you are planning to make it a safe queen, then you would want to know for sure. If it has great bluing and is nice, and a good price, I would say buy it, and carry it and shoot it.

Thanks for that quick reply, DJINCO. The gun is in pretty nice shape; I would guess 85 - 90%. Price was a little high at $950. If I were to get it, I definitely would get the letter from Roy Jinks. Tomorrow I will examine it real close.,

$950 a "little high"? In 85-90% condition IMO you are paying a $350-400 premium for that barrel length.
There is a Model 29-4 3" for sale now on GB.com. It is at $1400bin and it is described as a pre lock new gun.

Well I got the gun. After haggling I got the seller down a couple hundred and worked in a trade, so I am not too deep in it. Here are some pics. I wonder about that number on the frame under the grips that has the x's in it. Any ideas?

Doesn't look too bad, and deducting $200 from $950 it seems you aren't into it bad at all. Looka like a nice carry piece for hiking in bear country.

Not sure the total of 3" M29. I believe the first production was for 5000 and when to Lew Horton distributors. They also made them in 44 Special and 45 Colt.
