Dimensions of Model 64 versus 65
What would the size difference be between the Model 64 and the 65 ? Is the cylinder longer in the 65 ? Any differences in the frame size or weight ?
I have 2, 3, and 4 inch Model 64s and even if I had the 357 versions I would still probably only shoot 38s but am curious.
Thanks.

As far as I know, have heard or read there is absolutely no dimensional difference in the two.
Dave
PS: I've been corrected in later posts. They cylinders are a little different in length, the Magnum being slightly longer. As the young people say today, my bad!

The .38 special cylinder IS shorter than the .357 magnum cylinder, thus the barrel, sets back into the frame so the overall length of the #64 is a bit shorter than the #65.

The 64 and 65 frames have the same dimensions but the cylinder is slightly longer on the K Magnum,
As a result the amount of barrel that protrudes into the frame window is cut to fit so a 65 barrel wont work with a 64 cylinder.
There is also reportedly additional heat treating to the K
Magnums to add needed strength.
Recessed Model 65 magnum cylinders are slightly longer than non recessed 65 Magnum cylinders and both are longer than the Model 64 cylinder.

The 65 cylinder is 1.625 The 64 is 1.570. I didn't bother weighing them on my digital but obviously longer will weigh more.

Top strap configurations are different for earlier 64's to accomodate the thinner profile, tapered barrels of the 4" and 2" guns. Later 3" and 4" heavy barrelled guns have the same configuration as 65's.

Don't forget that the little holes in the round thingy are a bit longer to accommodate the longer cat'ridge of the .357

Thanks everyone. The 3" 64 and the 3" model 10 have to be the best balanced and beautiful revolvers on the planet.

I like K frames a lot. While I have a 3" #64, the .357 magnum versions provide the fireball effect that I enjoy.
Clockwise, 64-2, 65-3, 66-2, 65-5.

The SCSW notes the model 13 is slightly larger in the yoke region of the frame than the model 10, so I wouldn't be surprised if the 65 is also larger compared to the 64.

I give a slight nod to the Ruger Speed Six 2 3/4" in .357 or in .38spl as being the best balanced on the planet. I would put the 3 inch S&W 624 in second place in that department but well ahead in slickness of trigger action. After that I like the 696 and then the three inch 64. But all of them are excellent guns.
There is just something special about many of the N-Frame triggers.

Alan perhaps your thinking of either the Model 65 Lady Smith with shrouded ejector rod or the Models 19/66 slightly larger yoke necessitated for the frame to properly mate to the ejector rod shroud apparent when viewed from the muzzle shown below (L to R Models 15, 14-2 HB, 19-3)
Interestingly the full underlug K22 Models 617 and 17-6 also have the same slightly larger yoke to accomodate their full underlug barrels as well.

.357 - pinned and recessed
.38 - pinned only
As stated above. Longer cylinder to accommodate the longer cartridge.
