I've searched and searched and I can't find any info about a particular 681 PC. My LGS owner has told me he would consider selling his to me. It is a 3" non-ported 681 7 shot cut for moon clips with an unfluted cylinder. When he purchased it the gun it had a green finish on the cylinder and barrel, that he has since had s&w bead blast off. This is a really slick gun. I remember a post a while back from a gentleman that had the same thing done to his and he had mentioned a run of about 500 I believe. The 681 in question does have the appropriate PC markings on the barrel. I'm not looking for value as the selling price is something we would have to work out. Does anyone recall this model?

I have seen at least one example of this gun, not sure if it was ported or not. I believe the finish is called Birdsong-T or something similar. The standard reference refers to two 681 PC versions, one from Lew Horton and another from Camfour, but both are listed as ported. Someone here probably has one and will be along with more information.

That's it! Thank you much. I wonder if the PC would be able to replace the black/green finish.

158Grain:

I have a 681PC that I bought from another forum member with the Birdsong Black T and Green T finish on it. I used 120 grit aluminum oxide at 25 psi to remove the finish. I don't know if the finish can be replaced. I spoke to Mr. Birdsong himself before I removed it, and he said blasting was the only way to remove it.

The one I'm looking into looks identical to yours. Any idea how many were made? From what I have read the birdsong finish was from RSR, is that correct

I had forgotten the details on the 681PC. A 3 inch 681 is a great idea. Unfortunately, this one has almost every feature wrong. Unfluted cylinder is a disaster on a defense revolver (try loading in low light without flutes to feel for charge hole location), a huge grip and a lanyard loop to make concealment more difficult and a silly looking barrel profile typical of these PC guns.

To each his own, but a round butt 681 without all of these unfortunate features which are attractive to the arm chair warriors of the world would have been a better idea.

Here's what they originally looked like:

Have to admit, I think this is one ugly gun. If I could get it cleaned up like those above, without investing much more money in it I would. At the time I got it it was the only 681 3" available. It shoots OK but the appearance just turns me off. I now have a custom 3", RB so this one doesn't fill the need it once did, although having 7 rounds available and being cut for moon clips it does offer that advantage over my custom 6-shot.

I could be wrong, but I didn't see a lanyard loop on the 681PC

shawn,

What I don't get in your post is the reference to a "silly looking barrel profile". What's silly about it? When I had this custom made:

My gun smith pretty much duplicated the barrel profile of the CS 681. Not sure what else he could have done, except just cut it off square, but I don't see how that's an improvement.

Not arguing, just asking.

Well, Shawn, glad your opinion is the defining word in this discussion. I have no problem with the un-fluted cylinder. I would not have a problem with a fluted one, either. The barrel profile is another feature that I see no real fault in. And, insofar as the lanyard loop goes, I added that, along with the Hogue grips because I usually carry this gun in the mountains while hiking or on horseback. That's because I use a lanyard in those instances. This gun doesn't get carry time around town. It is equipped for it's intended purpose, and that does not include concealment. Further, I might have a bit more experience than your standard armchair warriors. Just a tad arrogant and assuming for my taste.

I'm afraid I don't know the numbers, 158Grain. I did hear the 681 PC was fairly rare. I believe they were distributed by RSR and others. I got this one used. I ended up having to order a hammer, rebound slide and trigger to get it back in shape as it suffered from a case of push-off. The previous owner told me about the problem before I bought it.

Nice job on that 681, Dave. I think the 3" L frame is very hard to beat. Since you modified it to fit your needs, it makes it even more special. It would be pretty easy to remove the Birdsong finish from your PC as I described above. I just completely disassembled it and blasted the finishes off. I then cleaned the Hell out of it using compressed air followed by a bath in solvent. Then I reassembled it with the new trigger, hammer and rebound slide in place. Shoots great. It's also nice to have the ability to use speed loaders, moon clips or single hand load to keep it charged up.

I think Shawn might be referring to the narrowing of the top rib of the barrel.

I gotta confess to liking Dave's better than the PC version(no bobbed hammer for me tho).

I'm making something similar right now.

I think Dave did quite a job on that 681. It looks very clean. If I could find a 681 4", I'd have to do the same to it.

gyrene, I had my gun smith bob the hammer because it's a DAO conversion. I also wanted it as snag free as possible for concealed carry. Didn't do it for looks but for functionality.

Totally understand Dave. And makes a lot of sense for a carry piece. Unfortunately not an option for me. My state won't issue carry permits.

Mine will be an HD weapon and range toy.
