New M629-6 4inch

I have been looking everywhere for a M69, but have struck out. I wanted to get my hands on it before purchase. So I stopped off at a LGS today and they had a NIB M629-6 4inch. Well, to make a long story short, they made me a deal I couldn't refuse.



I brought it home and immediately cooked up some loads. I had some Longshot in the powder measure from loading some 357 rounds. Loaded up some 240 gr XTP over 11 and 11.5 grs of Longshot. Not a heavy load, just a good mid range load. The group below is the 2nd cylinder full from the gun. Target is a std B-8 center at 25 yds from a rest.



It beats the heck out of a 4 5/8 Ruger SBH that I had been working with. The M629 carries better, is lighter and hopefully doesn't have problems like the SBH had. I have been a Ruger SA fan for years, but their quality has gone down hill lately. The M629-6, while maybe not as good as past Smiths, is good enough for me. The finish was not as brightly polished as it should have been. But it shoots great so far and that was my main wish. This is to be my daily "farm" and woods revolver.

Now, to start collecting some "safe queens".

That finish shines up nicely with some Mothers. Use a mini Powerball if you want it to shine almost like nickel... Don't ask me how I know..

I've got the same model (4" 629-6) that is my working gun when I feel the need for something along those lines. Good shooter, I like it.
Just curious (and nosey) what amounts (dollar wise) to a deal you couldn't refuse? Reason I'm asking is that I traded an EOtech for mine and was wondering how I came out.

Congrats...I'm looking at the 6" version but I'm not sure I like the finish on the newer guns. I'm trying to get past all the swirls and scratches. Yours looks pretty clean. From what I heard, mothers does make it shine but doesn't get rid of the swirls and scratches they come with these days. Is that true? Hows the muzzle flash with the 4" barrel? I would think it's pretty impressive! Congrats again.

The 629-6 Classic 5" I bought a few weeks ago has these same grips. I like the look & feel but when I took it to the range to "break it in" I ended up with a sore hand/joints the next day, or two after. In holding the gun the next day I noticed the reason; the metal backstrap is not exposed but the rubber grips come to more of a peak on the backstrap, instead of being rounded/flat. I've always had wood/hard laminated grips on my 29-2, 657-5 & 686-6s without issue so it must be their shape. I added a pair of Hogue Monogrips (#25000) to a recent Midway order & while these have exposed metal backstraps they are flatter across the back & feel better, though I haven't gotten back to the range yet to try them. I'll probably end up getting some Badger grips for it, like my others, though.

The Hogue made-for-S&W .500 Magnum X-grips are what you want for 'real' .44 Magnum use in your 629-6. Otherwise, you'll find some decent wood grips are sufficient for .44 Russians, Specials, and mild Magnums. Here is my 4" 629-6 with it's <6oz lighter brother, my 696-1:

PS I predict that you will be a lot happier with your 4" 629 than you would be with the 69!

I just bought the same gun today. Opted for the 4". I'm very pleased with it!
