MODEL 25-2 with all the goodies
I have run across a Model 25-2 in .45 ACP for sale. It has the original presentation case, tools, and all the original paperwork. The revolver looks to be in very good condition. The asking price is $799. I am new to this S&W culture thing, so I want to go easy and carefully. Is this price too much?
Also, I heard you could convert a .45 ACP revolver into a .45 Colt revolver. This sounds expensive to me, what are your comments?

I just bought a 25-2 which was in very good condition, but didn't have the box or tools -- just the revolver.
Paid $600.
I don't think I'd even consider trying to convert a 45 ACP to 45 colt.
If I wanted 45 colt, I'd buy a 45 colt in the first place.
I realize some may disagree, but I like 45 ACP better anyway. Lots of ammo choices, lower cost, just as accurate, perhaps more so.
If I needed more power than a 45 ACP would produce, I'd use my M29.

That is a fair price on the complete package- if I was looking for one I'd pay that. Agree with Dave, a conversion would not make sense. You'd need a new cylinder as well as to redo the barrel/forcing cone as the 45ACP cylinder is quite a bit shorter than a 45 Colt cylinder would be. However, I find that shooting 45 ACP out of a heavy N-frame is a lot of fun.

Look around at the various web selling sites. The price is fair, and even better if the barrel is 6 1/2". Good luck.

I would agree with the other comments. If you want the .45 Colt , then shop around. I just bought mine a couple of weeks ago for well under $900 including the shipping and FFL transfer cost. It is a Model 25 Mountain Gun in .45 Colt. It came with all the trimmings and absolutely like new. The only negative to some is the internal (some say infernal) lock, but it does not bother me in the least.

If the finish (blue) on the gun is in good condition with minimal wear showing, I would consider that a fair price. I paid that much for a really nice 25-2 without a box or case. Check the condition of the interior of the presentation case, too... however they can be restored at a reasonable rate. I agree with the others. Get a 25-5 if you want the 45 Colt caliber.

Remember these days you can find 'smiths that will groove the .45 Colt cylinder to accept .45 ACP moon clips. Nick

The 25-2 at that price is worth it, but mine is no show piece, it is a deer slayer bar none. ACP +p loads and. 45 Auto Rim cases loaded to 21,000 psi are enough for medium game. Your only mistake with the 25-2 is let it go once you have it in your hands. Conversions to 45 Colt at standard pressures don't offer that much extra. I use a 6 inch 25-5 as my N frame. 45 Colt. Some short cylinder .45 Colts are out there but not worth the trouble to seat bullets to match the cylinder.
