Ashland model 60?
This morning I traded a 6" ruger security six for this s&w model 60-1 snubby. I started to do research on it and I am having a bit of trouble finding anything. I don't care if this is a no frills gun or an Ashland, I just want to know. The model behind the wheel is listed as 60-1. The serial number is listed as ALU45xx. As you can see, it also has the adjustable sights. I have the original box but it offers little to no help. I also have the original wood grips, all I am missing is the "goodies," that came in the box. I really don't know what this is for sure, the papers in the box say its a Chiefs Special, but I haven't seen too many with adjustable sights. Any help is appreciated, I'm not really expecting to find out its an Ashland and worth 800, but I'm just curious.

If you traded that Ruger straight across you got one heck of a deal. That looks like the other Ashland models I have seen and they usually command top dollar. If I remember correctly only 660 Ashlands where made and they all bring $850 or more over at Gunbroker.

Yeah the gentleman actually gave me a little cash as well. If this is in fact an Ashland Ill likely give the cash back to him. I wish s&w had a master serial number registry online like other distributors.

Keep the cash, give thanks for a blessing.
The M60 with adjustable sights is uncommon, you got one whale of a deal. The adjustable sights may drag on your shirt as you pull the gun from under a shirt but they do improve the sight picture tremendously.

Yep my SCSW states ALU = M660 1986 "Ashland". Wonder what the Ashland means or stands for?

The Ashland models were specially made for the Ashland Shooters Supply Company, to my understanding. Less than 1000 models made = big money to some people.

Great find, and a great deal. I've been waiting to bump into one of these at a gunshow, but no luck so far. I love the idea of real sights on a J-frame. More impressive to me, however, is that you considered giving the cash back. A very stand up move in my book. That kind of good Karma always comes back to you. It's just my opinion. I'll get off my soap box now. Well done, sir!

Fugate sold one on 08/20 for $800. He rated it as 99% no box. It had rubber grips.

Interesting, mine has rubber grips on it but I have the original grips as well. Not sure on condition, the previous owner took it shooting occasionally, I haven't yet. I'm thinking of doing a minor polish this weekend to clean it up a little.

Nice find! Per your photo it has its original finish, and this would help maintain its value best.
You would have done well and then some with a straight trade, not that I have anything against Rugers. Perhaps give the extra money you received to your favorite charity?

Thanks for the info. I'm more of a semi-auto guy so revolvers are a little foreign to me. I've discussed it with the previous owner he doesn't want all the money back but I'm not really taking no for an answer. The Ruger was nice but probably only worth 400 on the higher end maybe 500ish. I actually only paid 200 cash for it plus about 58 dollars worth of ammo.

Their cost really doesn't reflect the 660 made. They SHOULD sell for more.

If I ever see one of those I'm afraid my bills will have to await payment!
SWEET!!!
And noble gestures accompany it. The gun world is often good that way - not always, but often.

Well I'm not sure if I'm keeping it or not. I'm not huge into revolvers but it seems like a really cool piece to own. Problem is, I'm not sure I'd want to go run rounds through it. If I decide to sell it I'll be sure to put it up here first seeing how there are people that would actually appreciate it for what it is
