Question about my 586-4
I was just curious how rare (if at all) is my 586-4 with the round butt is? Also, what would be the correct grips for this gun when new? Thanks for a great forum!!

I believe round butt is correct for all but the earliest 586 and 686-4’s. I think correct factory grips would have been Hogue finger groves.

Barrel length is the key.......... up until 1995 4" 586/686s and up were square butt....shorter barrels were round butt. In 1995/96 S&W went to all round butt revolvers..........
I have a 4"586 round butt -4 from IIRC about 1996. Great gun.
My guess would be that a round butt 586 would not be common compared to 686s.

You've got a couple of great guns there. Smith would have sold truck loads of the 681 if it had been introduced earlier.... by the mid-late 1980 the Wonder-nine was taking over the Police markets.
My 586 wears a set of Birdseye maple Spegel extended Boot grips...... My in case of BBQ gun.
I round butted a 4" 686-no dash back in the 80s.... it's my "go to" .357 L-frame.

Generally speaking this is correct, but don't forget the Special production runs of M586's in 1989, both 4" and 6" with matte blue finish, and round butt configuration, pretty cool guns.

True.....we needed more info.... if the OP was talking a 2 1/2 or 3" 586 all dashes would have been round butts .....
