Default New owner of a 629 looking for help.

Hey guys, appreciate you dropping in here and checking this out. I recently purchased a 629 classic dx, that came with a hunting scope and no iron sights, rear or front.

I'm trying to source some iron sights that will fit. S&W store only has the leaf, not the entire assembly. Brownells doesn't have it in stock, neither does MidwayUSA. For the record, I believe the stock iron sights I'm looking for are the .126 version that can be found here (but out of stock) http://www.brownells.com/handgun-par...prod14740.aspx

Aftermarket sights are fine, but I'm on a budget. Was planning on getting a hi-vis front sight anyway, but I didn't mind the white outline stock rear sight. Any better suggestions?

I've only ever owned cheap hi-points and other generic guns in the past and have never changed anything on them so all of this is new to me.

Gun is primarily for home defense purposes and hunting backup.

Here's a picture I snapped of it. Took the scope off and you can see it has no iron sights whatsoever. I did contact the seller to inquire about the stock ones, I'm still waiting to hear back about it.

this is pre-lock, pin on hammer, if that matters any.

Sure can. I believe its the new style rear with the spring-loaded interchangeable front, if that's what you're trying to determine. The front IS spring loaded anyway:

I'll trade you for my 629-6 Classic that still has the factory sights on it!

Lol! Just ribbing you...

I too have been looking off and in for a fiber optic front and rear set for my S&W revolvers. Trouble is it seems there are very few aftermarket rear sights available for the Smith revolvers. Heck, there aren't that many stand alone front sight choices either. But I have found I like the smooth look of the Hi-Viz front fiber optic for the Smith revolvers. Most others I have found up to this point are very squared off and rough looking in comparison. They look like they will be very prone to catching on clothing and whatnot when you try to holster and unholster the weapon. I have only found one source that offers a fiber optic rear and it is very bulky and squarish.

Your Classic DX has the quick change front sight, so you can get a new front sight and swap it out yourself. No tools required.

As to the rear, if the previous owner doesn't have it, I would try to get an OEM rear sight assembly for it. Check the classifieds here or post a wtb ad.

Nice acquisition with the Classic DX! Its one of my grail guns!

Really appreciate it man! I've kind of noticed how few aftermarket rear sights there are for the guns - I haven't found a single one in probably 3 hours of browsing time.

Thanks for the tip on checking the classifieds and posting a WTB ad! Didn't even cross my mind - was planning on emailing S&W at this point to inquire about replacement parts (as the rear assembly isn't on their website).

I hope I didn't overpay for this thing - paid $500 for it, and even without the sights I feel like that was a steal. A much nicer gun than anything I've ever owned, anyway.

What sites do you want to put back on ? I would do the fiber opt front with battle ship rear. Cool set up. Let me go to my LGS. The gun smith there has that gun and took off his sites to put on a scope. They are the orig ones.. He keeps everything but at the same time-he sells nothing . Let me ask him. He is at the shop thurs and Fri. Just pm me so i don't loose you.

Sorry, we must have posted at roughly the same time, didn't even see this post.

To be honest, I don't even know what a battle ship rear is. I definitely wanted a fiber opt front, and that's the extent of what I know. I just want a set of iron sights so I can get it down to the range. So I guess to answer your question about what I want to put on it - anything in stock, really. I have no experience with different sights so I don't have a preference yet.

I would think the standard rear sight assembly would fit your gun. Have you called the factory for one? I have a Hi Viz or similar sight that I do not like. PM me if you are interested and I will look to see what it is. I believe I bought it from Smith a few years ago. It didn't work for me, but you may like it.
