Covered backstrap wood boot grip?
Does something like this exist? Pretty much the wood version of something that would come on a taurus 85 etc.

Herrett Shooting Aces cover the backstrap. The extend a bit below the frame. I had a set on a 49. Fit my hand really well.
Here's a picture on a Colt.
F/S Nickel Finish1957 Colt Detective Special
There's currently a set on Ebay for a J frame for $115. Good grief!!! I didn't realize their price had gone that high. I gave $10 for mine.

Those look similar to what I was thinking but you're right, good grief on the price!

There was a set for a J Frame in 2010 on another S&W list. $38.
I really like my Aces but I wouldn't pay $115 for a set.

I was wondering if there is a rubber version of this. Anyone know of who makes this for a J frame?

Pachmayr compac is close, or just use a taurus stock rubber grip. Have to drill a hole for the pin at the bottom but easy enough. Taurus site has them new for $9+ $8.75 shipping. Oh and pop out the taurus emblems and stick plugs in the holes.

How you doin', Cap? No, they're not cheap, and haven't been for decades. Herrett's catalog is enlightening and disheartening re prices. I thank heavens for the $1 'junk bins' at some ranges and LGSs. Picked up quite a few IWB suede jobs for my snubs which I see now go for $30. Also some rubber grips and mags.
Stay safe, Cap.

Thanks for the idea to look at the Taurus grips. I almost never visit their site. I think the Pach Compacs are a little longer than I wanted.
Edited to add: I just received my Hogue Centennial Tamers and put them on my 640 Pro. These are longer than I want. They seem like they will be nice to shoot though. I'll try them at the range soon. They replaced the Uncle Mike no logo boot grips that S&W is selling on closeout. I like their length but would like something that covers the backstrap to give a little wider grip.

Have you seen these from Altamont?
The plain ones are listed as costing $40 while the checkered are $60, not including shipping that was almost $10 the last time I bought grips from them as a Christmas present. They come in several wood colors. I believe they make some of the grips that S&W sells. Good stuff!
Google "altamont smith" . . .
I really like the way you can sand on them to change any part of the shape that rubs your hand wrong and then just polish them with rouge and a buffing wheel in your Dremel and they look like new again. Haven't needed to do that with scratches or bumps (yet), but they should be just as easy to erase.

The Siles Company in NY made over sized grips. They were not expensive or very Chic but the filled the hand. You might find a pair of boot grips.
These are not boot grips but you'll get the idea.

Doing well. Who can complain about retirement?
I haven't kept up on Herrett prices as haven't been looking for any. They made really nice grips but not $115 nice. I'd look for some pachs or similar.
I agree about the junk bins. It takes some digging but there are deals to be found if you're looking.
Stay safe.

Tucson, I actually have some altamonts but I am looking for a 2 finger grip with the back strap covered. I've been considering cutting down a pair of those, but would be pissed if I messed them up bad (which is all too possible!).
Mrtrolley, I'll check those out!
Thanks everyone.

New favorite J frame grips - by Taurus :-)
Here's a link to the one I was talking about. I didn't know taurus made/makes a wooden version?

Update: I found a set of those same exact siles that mrtrolley posted above. They are new old stock and I paid $20 shipped. They are a little longer than a boot grip so if I feel compelled to do so I can just cut off the bottom. I feel more comfortable cutting those than something like the altamonts because I've never worked with dymondwood and don't know how it reacts to cutting (although it polished up nicely by sanding and buffing). Thanks everyone!
