Installing a new hammer in my 19-4
I bought a brand new Combat hammer to replace the bombed hammer the revolver came with. The hammer is a NOS. I could not get it to function properly. As far as I am able to tell, the double action sear is an RCH longer than the one in the hammer I am trying to replace! Otherwise the two hammers are identical ( minus the spur on one of them). So, I am thinking about swapping out the double action sears. It looks as though all it takes is to drift out the pin in each hammer enough to remove the sears, swap them then tap the pins back in flush. Any comments or ideas about this? JS. Papascull

They are spring loaded, so watch not to loose the spring. Otherwise you have the idea. It may or may not solve your problem. Just have to try.

If you get yourself a clear plastic bag that's big enough to work in, you can pop the pin out and the bag will keep the parts from going into orbit.

That's why it is stated these parts are "fitted". It takes a knowledgeable gunsmith to fit and tune the parts to work properly. Occasionally you will get one to drop in, but not too often.

The only thing I know about fitting hammers and sears is regarding safety. The fit when cocked for single action should withstand the "drop test". Not actually dropping the pistol but bumping, shaking, pushing on the hammer, so forth. Smooth pull, yeah, hair trigger uh uh.

Installing new Hammer
Just had this happen yesterday, put in new hammer and trigger, trigger as usual worked perfectly, hammer had same issue as you describe, switched
out parts between new and old hammers and it worked perfectly.
I have had very good luck personally switching well working sets of hammers and triggers between similar types of guns.
I have almost always had to do a switcharoo with NOS types.
I am no gunsmith, but this type of parts switching is within my meager skill level. I consider it "low end " fitting.I believe I could have made DA part on new hammer work by shortening it but I aways think why not try the one that came in gun first. I think file type fitting should be left to more qualified hands then mine.

Thanks, Patton Time. I need to get the proper size punch... it is so small. Withe the correct tool, it should be easy. JS. Papascull

Well, gentlemen, I want to thank you all for the assistance and moral support. I got the double action sear swapped over and the new hammer works perfectly. I now have a Target trigger and a Combat hammer on my nickel 19-4 2 1/2" Smith. Along with the Wison 178 spring kit and the new correct Magnas grips it looks and feels awesome. So, now I have a total of $475 invested plus tax and DOJ. I feel it is still a very good deal.
