Look what S&W 500 magnum 700 gr did to me.
I see people are wondering what S&W 500 magnum recoil really feels like. I was curious too but could not find this gun to try it so I purchased it. It was nothing like what you read on the net. Some say it becomes safe queen but this gun made my 1911 safe queen. 350 gr are lot of fun to shoot, then I wanted to see what kind of maximum recoil this gun could produce. I tried 700 grain absolutely maximum load possible and fired it from 4" model. You can see it for yourself what can this revolver do. S&W 500 magnum, 700 grain max load. - YouTube

Awesome, I looked for one before I retired. Every gun show I went to that had a guy waking around in a wrist cast I ran over to, but they had already sold their 500.

According to your post you bought a gun just to sample the recoil?? After seeing what it is like are you keeping it?

I think I'd shoot that thing one cartridge at a time ! I know the back of that gun range might be able to withstand the impact - but what about the range roof. My range would not let you shoot it.
Good luck with it. It looks like a very powerful weapon....

I don't think I will be running out to pick one up. Too old to enjoy that kind of fun any more . My 41 magnum is about my recoil limit. I'm starting to really appreciate the 38 special now days.

Honestly I have 2 other very nice guns and since I purchased this revolver I have not fired my other 1911 and it has been now 5 month. If S&W made more variations in 4 or 5 inch models (something fancy looking) I would get them too. I lost all interest to shoot any other guns.
Keep in mine that 330 - 350 grain bullets are very pleasant to shoot and extremely accurate.

I've got a 4 inch 500, box of 700gr bullets, and a canister of Lil Gun, but have too much fun shooting my 44's and maybe a little too much common sense to get my 500 out to the range. yep, call me a sissy with my itty bitty 44's.

You might want to have to forward observer call in a fire mission for that howitzer. As a matter of fact I think shooting a howitzer would be less painful.

If shooting that gun made you warped enough to enjoy the "music" in that video, it is clearly time to sell it and seek professional help.

D10- Were those your loads or "factory"?? If they were your loads what was the recipe? The 700gr from ballistic supply produces a major fireball out of a 4". The recoil from the 700gr/4" is not bad, you need to try that same round in a 8 3/8 SW or better yet a 7.5 BFR, it will give you a better understanding of the term " free Recoil". The 700 is also not very accurate past 20-25 yrds out of a 4", it's accuracy truly does shine out of the longer barrels. Be Safe,

I dare you to rapid fire the trigger next time at the range. (kidding, please don't.) That is some serious kickback recoil.

I don't think my old bones could handle it. If I was younger I'd have the longest barrel with wheels on it. I don't think we'll see anything bigger than a 500 s&w. Unless it's an auto?
Can Clint Eastwood squeeze out one last dirty Harry movie with a 500 s&w in 44mag so he can safely shoot it? Bill

Back to the OP, watching that gun twist up and around during recoil was truly frightening. I don't want to be in the same county when he lights that cannon off. No control. Not safe.

I don't need it, .44mag is plenty enough. I figure I won't have to stop a charging rhino anytime soon. Besides, who can afford to shoot a .500mag? The ammo for it is almost as expensive as .22lr ammunition.

You won't see anything bigger because anything (non-smooth barreled) over .50 caliber would be a destructive device.

Knowing nothing about the .500, I wonder if the OP was shooting a handload in the video. If so, was it a safe handload or overpressure?

Back in the day, there were Model 29s to be found in the pre-owned case in various gun shops, often with the original box of ammo, minus 4 or 5 rounds.
I am not sure I have seen the same thing with used Model 500s. I am not sure what that says about us as shooters, but I am sure it says something!

Yes they were my own loads and It was scientific experiment for me. This is not something you'd use for shooting at the range or hunting. Therefore I would not recommend using my recipe, bullet was seated out to create more space for powder. But I'll give you safe load for 700 magnum which I also used, it is 24 to 25 grains of H110/W296 with light or heavy crimp. As far as accuracy, I shot it at 50 yards with 4" model and it was fine.

Somehow, I seem to be able to resist the urge to shoot something that kills on one end and cripples on the other.
Especially when not certain which is which.....

The 500 really is a versatile cartridge and can be gentle or punishing on the sending and receiving end depending on what you feed it. I have fired max loads with the Sierra JSP and its not "fun" to shoot and one box of 50 is a workout.
The beauty of heavy cast bullets is they can be driven at normal non-magnum velocities and avoid leading issues and still have freight train power and penetration. I have a custom 600 grain mold and it gives me the ability to make my own slugs that are cost affordable and I can load them up or down. 600 or 700 grains of anything coming out the end over 1000 FPS is a handful.
Loaded up heavy its a gun unlike any other for "launching" projectiles.

Absolutely agree with S&W 500 Magnum being very versatile and on top of that it almost costs me same as shooting .22 cal. I reload (do not cast) my own bullets and 50 rounds come out to $15 to $22 depending on the load.

I would love to make a video shooting flying clay targets with S&W 500 magnum, but can't find a place where I could safely shoot that.

Look what S&W 500 magnum 700 gr did to me.
I saw my friend looking at the video, wow what a power. I've only shot 9mm but I'd love to try it.

Ummm, thanks - but NO thanks. If I want my hand twisted off at the wrist I'll grab hold of some spinning machinery. At least that way I can safely let go when I've had enough!

I tried 700 grain absolutely maximum load possible and fired it from 4" model. You can see it for yourself what can this revolver do. S&W 500 magnum, 700 grain max load. - YouTube

Lets look at the errors in this post.
1. 500 SW was developed with 8 inch barrel
2. Firing load for an 8 inch barrel in a 4 inch barrel
3. Trying to hold that amount of recoil with a weak grip
4. Trying to convince us that a 500 sw has made a 45 acp a safe queen. It is likely because his wrist is to sore from firing the 500 SW.

He is. His "horsepower" description of certain guns and calibers is something I've stolen from him.
