If you are asking if a 686 can be fitted with a 38 Special cylinder, the answer is yes.

357 Magnum firearms can already safely chamber and fire 38 Special Ammunition.

So unless you live where it is against the law to own a 357 Magnum firearm, I can not see a reason to do this.

Unless you get lucky....just about any replacement cylinder has to be fitted to the parent gun. Within models....you can often do it. From one model to another IMHO would be a long shot.

Is there another round you can use...like 38-Super?

The 242 cylinder was manufactured after S&W went to CNC produced frames. As long the donor 686 is also from this era the cylinder can be fitted to the revolver.

If the donor 686 is already a 7 shot firearm this will be a simple job for any qualified gunsmith. If the donor 686 is a 6 shot there will be some additional work.

No a 686 no dash will probably not be able to have a 242 cylinder fitted to it. You would need a considerably newer 686 for that combination.

The model 67 and model 686 are totally different frames and most parts are not interchangeable.

Not sure where your country of origin is (and that's no bash), but maybe the very best thing you can do is send it to S&W and let them chamber it in 38-special only, if you have no other choice. It has been done with some 681's before. A recent poster on the forum here has one that was chambered in 38-special for some LEA. I think a smith is going to have to get this gun to convert it anyway....I've never seen a 38-special only 686/681 cylinder for sale anywhere. The most economical thing may simply be to sell the gun and get a medium frame chambered in 38-special. You may have to go to another brand, but your options seem extremely limited.

Goberto:

If you have a 7 shot titanium cylinder and want to fit in a 686/586 revolver, it can be done. But you need a competent gunsmith to do it, because he has to adjust the cylinder and hand to work properly.

Model 67 is a K frame while model 686 is a L frame, frame dimensions are different.

I have a 586 no dash with a titanium cylinder in 38 spl, it works great.
