I have had a S&W model 25-5 in 45colt for several years now. It has a 4" barrel and the 3ts. It is one of my favorite revolvers. In a few recent threads this specific -5 model has been talked about and it would appear that all the other forum members have 25-5s with pinned barrels. My barrel is NOT pinned. Is this unusual or just a very late -5? I was under the impression that S&W gave a new dash number for any significant engineering change. Anyone out there that can help me with my confusion? The serial number starts with an AUV if that helps any.
Yes, the later 25-5s would have deleted the pinned barrel. There are probably exceptions but I don't recall seeing a three-letter SN prefix gun with a pinned barrel, and the engineering change number does not correlate with loss of the barrel pin.
My 25-5 Colt does not have a pinned barrel. Used to have another very close in s/n but was pinned. I did the drop test in the cylinders with a projectile and with the pinned barrel it plopped right through. The non pinned cylinder was tight enough to not allow the projectile to freely drop through the chambers.
I believe the earlier ones had some accuracy issues due to wide cut cylinder holes.
The info I have gained here on the forum is that the 3 letter prefix to serial number had the correct cylinder throats, while the N prefix with pinned barrel had the over-sized throats.
My throats measure uniformly at something around .4515". A cast bullet measuring .452 requires a slight push for them to pop thru. It shoots cast bullets like a dream.
