I have a 642-1 and was not even aware that there is a 642-2. What if anything is the difference in the two?

I have a 642-1 ct and there is no lock. I believe thats the difference but others with more knowledge will come along and comment I'm sure, Rick.

I have a 642-2. Yes it has the lock. Bought it new. Have never engaged the lock nor do I plan to. Put about 1500 rounds thru it in 3 years, no malfunctions of any kind (except the 'thumbpiece' came loose and fell off........my fault.......did not know to periodically check it for tightness) :)

Years ago there were numerous stories of accidental engagement of the internal lock. While admittedly very rare, the fact that it could happen affected the feelings of confidence in S&W revolvers, making some less certain it would go bang when you pulled the trigger. Just to eliminate the little bit of concern is why I had the internal lock removed in my 640. Since I had the choice with the 642 I specified the model without a lock. I was not aware, until this thread that the two variations are identified by the -1 and -2 and thought possibly the -2 represented some other functional or cosmetic change from the original.
