Years ago there were numerous stories of accidental engagement of the internal lock. While admittedly very rare, the fact that it could happen affected the feelings of confidence in S&W revolvers, making some less certain it would go bang when you pulled the trigger. Just to eliminate the little bit of concern is why I had the internal lock removed in my 640. Since I had the choice with the 642 I specified the model without a lock. I was not aware, until this thread that the two variations are identified by the -1 and -2 and thought possibly the -2 represented some other functional or cosmetic change from the original.
