Default Anyone buy a NY1 from J&G recently?

I'm thinking about getting a Model 64 and from what I've read the NY1 is a very good version. I know J&G has been selling these for a while and the price keeps creeping up. Now might be a good time to get one at a fair price ($389). I'm curious about the condition of what they currently have in stock.

Anybody buy one from them in the past few months? What did you think?

Thanks much!

I did work on one recently for a co-worker, who wanted it checked out. No major problems. Cylinder alignment was out of spec. Otherwise, just the normal cosmetic issues on the exterior. Nice gun for the price (<$400)

Thank you for your feedback. Those guns had some type of special finish applied. Is there any way to preserve/restore that or if I get one that's rough; or is it best to get it fully refinished?

Well, I just got off the phone with Ben at J&G and ordered the last NY-1 they had in stock! He said it has some wear and an unfortunate (but minor) ding on the top but it locks up tight and seems good to go. This was my first time ordering a gun from them and he actually went into the warehouse, brought the gun out and called me right back! He took off the grips and looked it over for me.

His honest appraisal was that he's seen better looking 64 police trade-in's but this looked as good as any NY-1 he's seen and that was good enough for me. Excellent service and patience in answering my fifty questions - can't say enough good things about dealing with J&G. Now I just need to practice patience until in arrives at my LGS later this week

Joe DeSaye who is the "J" and one of the starters of this business apparently instilled this type of customer service into his employees and it's still there. I stop by whenever I'm in Prescott and it's generally lines of customers inside waiting to be served. They do the Crossroads shows and it's the same there.
Anytime I've bought a used firearm from them the employee has brought at least 3 examples out of the warehouse and let me select the one I wanted. On one occasion he went back and got some more since I didn't the original ones that were offered.
This type of service is unfortunately rapidly disappearing in this day and age.

I've bought 6 guns from J&G since I used to live in Prescott. I would go there for all my needs if I lived closer. They go out of their way to make sure you get what you need. Don't be afraid to order more from them.

Based on today's order, I really wish they offered in-house refinishing but I see they send guns out for that so I might as well stick to my original game plan for my Colt project.

The factory called this a "vapor hone" finish, which from my understanding was a fine bead-blasting. Many gunsmiths offer this along with the factory, but the latter is very back logged with work now.

I got one from J&G a few years back.
The vapor hone was mostly rubbed off.
I sent it in to S&W for their quick turnaround "Combat Revolver" job that includes refinish.
In the process, the serial number lasered below the cylinder was obliterated and they did not replace it.

I've seen your gun in another post, TAROMAN - looks mighty nice! What did S&W charge for the work a few years back? I see that option is $265 presently - not a bad deal. Also, had you specified that you wanted to retain (or replace) the S/N under the cylinder do you think they would have accommodated you?

I cost $195, IIRC.
And I did request that they re-etch the S/N.
Probably would have been custom work outside the scope of the quickie combat job.

I could see where that would be somewhat disappointing. Still looks great! Any chance the NY1's would ever become collectible *enough* that refinishing one would be taboo? I'm not a collector and I'm buying a shooter but curious nonetheless.
