Model 637 up-grade?
I was watching TV yesterday and saw a segment on "Guns & Ammo" about S & W doing an up-grade mod on the model 637-2 revolvers.
Has anyone had that up-grade mod done?
It looks pretty interesting. The up-grade takes the revolver from a double / single action to a double action only, boobs the hammer and smooths the trigger pull. I think it adds the clip grip as well..
I have emailed S & W for more information. Can't wait to hear from them.

Single action only? I've seen that done to certain target revolvers, and even then it was for specialized slow-fire competition. What would be a purpose of a SAO self defense snubby? Conservation of ammo?

Sounds a lot like the 637 "Wyatt" revolvers of last year, was it? I guess you mean converted to double-action-only (DAO) and not to single action. It's a nice PC gun but I don't know that I would send a regular 637 back to the mother ship for a similar re-work.
On the "Wyatt 637", the trigger rebound spring is lighter and I understand the PC has done some internal polishing. The hip/clip grip is available from DeSantis, I believe, for $29.95. It is the only feature of the PC Wyatt I do not like. I do absolutely love my 2 Wyatt's.
Have they made public the cost of the re-work? That could make or break the deal. Lastly, I don't feel there is an awful lot to gain in a lightweight snub by such a re-work.

Hard to imagine why S&W would modify an airweight snub nose from it's intended purpose of a concealable personal defense gun by making it single action...

ken, kernel, Hi! Please re-read my post. I think some not-too-knowledgeable person in their PR dept. mis-stated or did not understand (Lot of hyphens here!) the procedure. It probably should have read double-action-only, i.e. convert the 637 to a single mode of fire...
Maybe I should send the PR dep't. a bill! Ya think?

Once it's converted to DOA how's it different than a 642?

attn kernel krittenden
Can't really tell you, kernel. I've been doing what I shouldn't: winging it. How different from a 642? Going by my "Wyatts," the hammer has been de-spurred and the PC-tuned action is smoother than that of the 642. Can't say if this would be the case on a 637 re-work. Now if the OP could show us some type of advertising flyer with details, maybe we could guess more accurately.

Well S & W Customer Service tells me that this mod does not apply to the 637. That is very strange. I recorded the "Guns and Ammo" segment of the show on RFD-TV and they plainly say and show a model 637-2. They say to contact the Performance Center for instruction on how to get the gun to them.
The mod was supposed to consist of according to the interview:
Polished Cylinder Flutes, Chrome Plated Bobbed Hammer, Hand Polished Chrome Plated Trigger, PC Tuned Action, Clip Grip,
No cost was discussed.
Guess "Guns and Ammo" got the wrong information.
No big deal I was just curious about the mod and if anyone on the forum had had it done.

You might be able to get the Performance Center to do the work on your 637, you'd have to call them and ask (speak to the Performance Center folks, not CS). More likely, as has been posted, they were discussing the 637 Wyatt Deep Cover, a 637 that is available from the factory already modified/upgraded by the Performance Center. Check it out here - Product: Model 637 Wyatt Deep Cover. I just traded into one of these the other day. It's a very nice little gun, great action, well put together, good looking (laser engraving not withstanding), and a really solid shooter.
