Default I still like the 6.5 best

I have handled most sizes and fired the 8 3/8 and the 6.5 seems all around most comfortable for me.....

I found this one and loved it, but a friend of mine "wanted" it more. But it was, and still is, a great revolver.

Have the 8 3/8" and the 6 1/2". Both are fun, but I prefer the 6 1/2" and think a 5" would be better for packin' in the hills.

Well I better join in I guess...I had an 8 3/8" and a 4" both 500's

But I traded the 4" on a nice 6.5" with a guy here on this forum..and I got this thing about orange, so I changed the grip on the one..

I too like the .500. My 8-3/8" is one of the best designed, smoothest shooters that I have. The porting is fantastic. Keeps it level, just need a strong arm to keep it forward. The 6.5" though, gosh it likes to raise up and fire high, and it doesn't like the casings of Winchester Super-X. They get stuck on an average ratio of 2:5 rounds. I don't know why not, but never had that problem with the longer guy.

YOU my friend have sorted through all the hyperbole and come up with the RIGHT conclusion! The 6.5" partial shroud barrel is probably THE ideal of all the .500 models!
It POINTS the best of all....balances far better than the 8 3/8ths barrel, and does NOT deliver anything close to the sonic wave impulse to the ears as does the models with the removable compensator.
It weighs very little more than the 4" model, and IF S&W has done their job right it will deliver greater velocity than the short barrel (though my 4" model shoots almost 100 fps FASTER than my 6.5" model).
The main advantage to the 6.5" is how naturally it comes onto target...maybe not meaningful when shooting flapping paper, but VERY important when shooting at a head the size of a transmission, covered with fur, and topped off with finger-length teeth!

Here's mine. It was the first S&W wheel gun I owned.
Of course, the family has grown since (in smaller frame sizes).

Simply amazing. Neither my budget nor my wrist could handle such a remarkable revolver, but these guns are the end result of over a century of tweaking, fixing, and fine-tuning the finest of firearms this world has ever known. Man, they look like fun!

My 5" 460 is incredibly loud. I'd never, ever try to shoot it without earplugs in.

Its made by Uncle Mike's and its called the Sidekick. I have never found it on their website so Id call them and ask. I was lucky the gun shop I bout the 500 at just had got it in and gave me a good deal on it. I really like it, but I need to wear my back up in a shoulder holster to help keep my pants up if I do some walking in the woods. Just wearing around the range/campsite is ok, but heavy walking it will pull yer pants off without some upper support like spenders or a shoulder holster

My first attempt at posting pic's so don't laugh too much....

My 500 in the case. After thinking about how to keep some rounds with the gun, I used a drill and an empty case to put some holes in the foam to store some rounds, Also I cut a slit at the bottom front of the barrel to store the allen wrench used to remove the compensator:

Hey, would you do me a favor and measure that case LxW, I got one from S&W , said it was large for the 8 3/8" barrel but mine barely fits , even on an angle!

Thanks ,Scott

Not a problem! It's 11, 1/8" wide by 18, 1/4" long. Also this is the case she came in from the factory...

My performance center gun , factory stock long barrel ported and my DIY chopped down no-port 6 1/4" 500 revolvers.

How I chopped mine....

A peek inside the S&W 500 barrel shroud.

Just a note. I took that picture with the other hand, so no photographers were endangered while shooting this photo.

A little update, I've altered my pair a little. Put a scope on my long one , and if you remember up in post 12 I said I had a thing for orange so I altered the little one too.
