Default General opinions on the 686 vs 586

I have a 686-6 , 4 inch , 7 shot. I've always wanted a 586 and I'm thinking of trading my 686 for a 586 or a blue 19. I have a 617 that could be the twin of my 686 and a 586 or 19 would vary the aesthetics of my S&Ws.

Is either the 586, 19 or 686 inherently more valuable than the other? It seems there are many 686s for each 586???

Which do y'all prefer?

Everyone has different likes needs, and desires! I think that many people prefer stainless guns because of the ease of keeping cosmetics good. I like the looks of blue guns better than stainless. BUT, I have both a 586 & 686. I have more stainless guns than blue. Condition being equal the 686 will bring a higher dollar. JMO! Bob

A high luster blued revolver is a thing of beauty but the finish can be scratched easily and it's harder to keep it looking new. A stainless revolver cleans up easier and there are ways to keep it looking closer to new.

We had a similar discussion a few months back on a different forum. I own a 686 and thought it was more valuable. Others informed me I was incorrect due to just what you stated "the rarity of the 586". Not that it is rare but just lesser number than the 586.

I looked the topic up in the Blue Book (mine is outdated since it is the 32 editions). It confuses me since I am not clear as to whether I am looking at the right revolver or not. If I am reading it right, in doubt, it would indicate the 586 might be worth about $50.00 more than the 686.

It will be nice to read other's opinions particularly if they know with certainty.

I would further state to buy what you like. If in doubt and if possible score both of them. I bet you will never loose money on either as long as you do not over pay.
