I inquired about a model 649 because the serial number didn’t appear correct. 2 different people confirmed the 649 serial number was 333XX. With this model coming out in 1985 and the alpha/number serial starting in 1980 something appears odd.
The gun is stainless and stamped 649.
What am I missing here?
Presuming you are looking at the bottom of the grip frame , someone has removed the SN and restamped another number. It may be the work or assembly number if seen elsewhere on the gun, such as on the side of the grip frame or the yoke cutout. That would be a bad thing to find here...
The serial number is on the frame under the yoke with the model number. Its not a restamp or assembly number unless it was done at the factory in error of the serial.
Is the number on the bottom of the grip frame the same?
A five digit numeric s/n would be a rare thing on a modern era Smith. I've never seen one. I have seen some custom s/n's, but S&W will usually try to get at least one letter in there. For example, they made some M49's for Saudi Arabia in the 1991 that began with a J followed by six numbers. They've done other custom s/n for specific agencies.
Your 649 may of been LEO issued at some point in it's past. Is it so marked?
