Default Weigand 649 Pawn Shop Find

I happened to stop by the local pawn shop on my way home and found this S&W 649-2 38 special. It has been treated to the Weigand 4 PJ Executive package. I was thrilled to find it!

I have yet to see other 649's most seem to be 640's. Do any of you have experience with a Weigand J frame?

I have seen a Weigand 640 but, never a 649

That is a cool find.

Default NOT SMITH'S

1- Ruger 3" sp 101, 1- Ruger redhawk 5" 357. Be careful if shooting at an indoor range, as the gasses leaving those hybra ports have broken overhead lights. If you fired one straight up, it would fry your face. But he did good work, reduced "felt" recoil & enabled you to fire faster/more accurately.

Wow, great catch. I never seen one in person, only read about them. What kind of deal did you get on it?

I have a 640 and must say that it is one of easiest to shoot and manageable J-frames that I have experienced.
You need to be judicious in your load selection and not lured into the notion that you can really beef it up because it is ported.
My experience is that the severity of the flash is a bit overstated and is really no worse than that of many of the magnums encountered at the range.

I bought my ex a 640 years ago and sent it off for the Weigand treatment. Came back a real gem of a carry piece. Hope she still has it; wish I did.

Wow is right. I just looked at their web sight and was impressed with the amount of work they can do.

Congrats on a great pick up.

On GB a 640 Weigand sold two weeks ago for $705. No reserve with the opening price of $499. Someone got a pretty good deal.

Pretty interesting. How does that effect muzzle velocity?

I'm planning to shoot it on Saturday, but I probably won't keep it. I recently acquired my FFL and have a strong desire to keep most every interesting S&W I find, but I make my bride smile when I'm willing to let the business turn an immediate profit rather than saving firearms for my long-term investment portfolio.

To answer some of your questions: The price I paid would've been fair for a stock 649-2. It's always fun to be in the right place at the right time!

As far as velocity goes, this article answers those questions: Smith and Wesson 640 Weigand 4PJ Executive package

Default SEVERITY OF THE FLASH

NO, like recoil, it is not worse/better just felt differently. Don't think hot gasses/flames escape thru those hybra ports on the top of the barrel & can do damage?, especially with larger caliber/hot loads, put your bare hand 3 feet or so above the ports, fire it, and get back to us. Don't want to use your hand? You could roast marshmellows real fast.
