Wife's gonna kill me. Got the humpback disease.
It always seems to happen that when I get a gun stuck on the brain I run across one at an irresistible price.
This time it's a used 649-5.

My wife made fun of me recently for packing a big 1911 daily. She also made me promise to not buy another gun until next year.
So, by my logic I have a smaller gun that should not be subject to her ridicule, and as it is on layaway I'll not be picking it up until next year.
I've been joking that it'd be cool to be able to "New York reload" my 442. Looks like the 442 will be the "reload" to the 649.
I shoot the 442 pretty well, though my endurance limits practice to only fifty shots at a time. With eight more ounces, a little more sight radius, and the addition of a Pachmayr Compac grip I think it'll make a fine discreet carry piece and shooter. The grip and a "Plug" are all that is planned for it.
I have my two favorite N frames so it's only right that I complete things with the two favorite J frames.
I've gone from no revolvers to S&W number four over the past year plus. I can shoot my 442 almost as well as any handgun I own, just not quite as fast. I'm hoping this 649 will be easier still. It will likely see little magnum use, but plenty of +P.

Great. All you need now is a 13th century European cathedral, a bell tower, and you're set.
This is my daily carry, Quasimodo, a M638-2:

I got myself in hot water with the wife this weekend. A buddy told me about a GB auction ending soon with a fairly low bid. So I decided to throw my name in the mix (had to create an account first). I upped the bid by 5 dollars and told myself to let it ride, don't get sucked into a bidding war. I was pretty sure I'd get outbid.
Well, it didn't work out that way. Friday night I recieved an email stating I was the winner of the auction. Oh boy, she's REAL happy with me.....
Now I get to buy her some new appliances.

Short or long, alloy or steel, as long as it's 5" or under they carry the same to me. The 5" shoots the smoothest so that's the one. It's just not the best for running around with. It can beat you up a little.
She commented when I strapped it on to walk the dog one day.
The 1911 is a versatile gun which is why it is my favorite and there's only one.
The J frames are accurate little pistols in their own right and sure pack a lot of firepower in a tiny package. I am quite enamored with them

You are going to enjoy carrying that Humpback. I carry the blued version, M49, either pocket carry or Galco speed paddle holster. I don't believe I could wait that long to have it in my hands. Good luck.

I'm quite patient. I've waited a year and a half for an ordered gun and have had a few guns laid away.
Before committing to this I put the 442 in the waistband as a test and it sure works out nicely.
These grips seem to work well and look excellent on these guns:

I do too they have a unique look that grows on you. Once they are on the brain they stay there. I'm looking to get a 438 next.

That's REALLY going to raise the cost of new acquisitions!
Hard not to like 'em, they do pocket carry well with the added luxury of single action cocking if needed. I just need to be in the right place at the right time, I wouldn't mind a 638. But for now, my 649 is my real "pocket rocket".

I'm lucky of sorts. My wife loves to shoot appreciates s&w blued and stainless revolvers. When I buy one it's for the house not mine or hers and she seems to like what I bring home. However there has been a time or two when I've heard"are you done now" buying guns. At that point I lay off for awhile. Still I'm lucky she shoots with me

Why yes, yes they do - good choice. Be careful tho, sometimes the rubber tends to print.
This little 649nd w/ Galco paddle holster has been my carry choice for a while.

YES!!!!! I have one just like that, not to mention is lightweight cousins 638 and 642 (the latter is a second cousin). They are outstanding! That hump was, in my opinion when I first saw a Model 38, CAPITAL U UGLY! Now I think they're super sharp looking and wish I'd bought one way back when but one was on my grail gun list until I happily acquired my 649 in the mid-90s.
Well done!

I'm a Humpback fan myself. Pictured is my EDC - Model 38-0 (top) with NY Reload 638-1 (bottom right), and my 649-0 (bottom left).

Dave

I just bought a new 649-5 yesterday. I have a few J-frames and owned a 649 (can't recall which dash) at one time but sold it, and always wanted another. When I spotted this one I decided to jump on it. I think they are the most versatile for CCW of the 38/357 J-frame snubs. The 36/60 iterations have the snag-prone exposed hammer, and the 40/340/640 do not, but are DA only. The 49 family is the best all-arounder in my opinion.

That would be "slant back."
My wife got her laptop so maybe I'll get some mercy. I've said "last one" a few times recently already.

Love it. My every day carry. Forget I have it and have gone in some places I was not supposed to have it. Oh well CCW works. Have CT laser grips to aid my old eyes.

My wife mostly appreciates those with investment value...and those I've purchased with "our" money are hers, too.
I actually don't want her shooting my pre 27...cause she may try to lay claim on that one. She told me my holster had the wrong initials put on it...
I'd like to be done, to be honest. I'd rather be investing in reloading supplies and shooting instead of putting money towards another. I do "need" a stainless J frame, though.

I been there and when you get that e mail you won! You would think we would be happy with a smile but all I can think about is the wife being piss. So I go in my garage to see what I can sell fast on c.l. Just yesterday my wife was in the back yard and didn't see the two sheds. They are small rubber mate 3x4 sheds that I keep rakes and beach chairs in. I sold them to help buy my new sw 9 mm.
