My 500 came with the Hi-Viz front sight and the standard adjustable rear. I've grown to not really like the front sight and miss the white outlined sight that I had on my Model 29. To get the weapon sighted in I've had to raise the rear sight a bit more than I really want to so I started doing searches for sights for X-Frame revolvers without too much success....

While on the S&W website tonight I did yet another search and came up with this page:

Sight Accessories - Smith & Wesson

If you click on any of the sight's listed they are for the K, L, or N-Frames. None for the X-Frame.. So I decided to e-mail them to find out if they were compatible with the 500. Clicking on the Contact link I found the contact phone number AND the hours which they were open 'till 8:00PM EST so I gave them a call!!

After talking with a VERY nice rep, he confirmed that the sight's listed on the link I've posted will indeed fit the X-Frame revolvers!! Also he confirmed what I had read which is the windage screw is broken during the rear sight change out so I'm gonna have a gunsmith do this I believe...

Time to spend another $100.00 or so!! :D

Hope this helps someone!!!

I had a set of 3-dot night sights installed on my 460v...Meprolights. Meprolight Tru-Dot Adjustable Sight Set S&W K L N-Frame Red Insert

I went to the range recently to try it out and my fears were realized... the rear sight was a more "standard" profile as opposed to what came on my 460. So I have my elevation nearly as high as it will go without completely unscrewing the elevation screw! :(

I THINK it will be ok... time will tell I guess. The flip side is, I DO like the 3-dot night sights. I find I can line up more accurate shots a little quicker.

Anybody have any advice on my little issue with the elevation screw?? I did realize that the sight profiles for the X-frames may be different than that of the other frame sizes....Took a chance, almost lost out.

460 front sight

roscoepc, you didn't mention what bbl. length you have or what sight(s) combo you're going to get?

If you're interested in the .300" gold bead front sight, you can get that direct from SDM Fabricating for $55. I ordered one of those & a red fiber optic .300" front sight on last Friday evening. They shipped it Saturday, USPS-Priority Parcel & I received it Monday. Can't bet that for prompt processing & shipping!

I have the PC 460 Carry, 3-1/2" bbl. which came with the HiViz green front sight, .200", which I don't care much for either. In addition to the taller .300" front sight I went with a taller rear sight too. The factory rear is plain black & .115" tall. I had a complete white outline .160" rear sight assembly which I replaced it with. This combination put the rear sight adjustment at just a little over the mid-point, for me. The .160" sight also has a deeper notch, compared to the .115", which helps too.

Rear sights have been hard to get (back-order) but if you have the extra cash just get the whole assembly & replace it yourself (one screw easy job) & save paying someone else to replace the blade only.

By the way, I like the red fiber sight so far. Hope to get to the range soon.

Red-Ride, sorry I got nothing.

BLUEDOT37, my apologies! I've got the 8-3/8" interchangeable comp barrel on mine. I'm gonna upgrade the rear sight from the stock .126 to the .160 white outline sight which should enable me to lower the height to where I think it should be.

Product: .160 White Outline Rear Sight Blade Kit

For the front sight I'm getting the 3 piece set:

Product: Classic Front Sight Set

RIDE-RED 350r, It sounds like we've got similar problems with the rear sight: Elevation is too high on the rear sight! A taller rear sight should fix you up!

I just bought the 3.5" myself. I'm not real big on the fiber optic sights (on any handgun) - they work great in the sunlight, but without a direct light source they just don't work for me. That said, I'm frustrated that on a PC gun, they don't size the rear notch deep enough to allow you to see the entire green dot of the front sight. When I try to get a quick sight picture, I find myself pointing high because I naturally want to see the entire green circle.

Aaaanyway... I have two questions. I'm also thinking about switching the rear to a slightly taller, white-outline blade - any recommendations on which 'size' I should get? And second, if I do change the front sight, I want to go with just a plain white dot -- can anybody point me to one that will work? I put one on my 627, but with this sight being pinned, I'm not sure if the same 'quick-change' blade will work.

Thanks in advance!!!

I can confirm rear sight for the X-frames are same as K, L, or N-Frames.

I just started using LPA sights and found them to be excellent.

3 versions are offered

Hope this helps

You don't say exactly what size rear sight you want to go to and that will determine what size front you need.

As I said above, a .160" rear sight blade will need a .300" front sight. The complete .160" assembly is S&W# 22324 or Midway# 194815.

The only front white dot DX style blade I've noticed comes in S&W (4 blade) pack #221300000 & it is .250" tall so you'd need a shorter rear blade (maybe a .146" ??) for it to work with best.

I wasn't a fiber sight fan before but I really like the SDM .300" red fiber sight I got. I've been using it more than the .300" gold bead sight, which is very nice too.

The SDM sight ( Gold bead ) is a solid , real gold bead.
Its an excellent quick "dot" that shines and will never tarnish.

I put interchangeable bases on a few of my guns and I can swap a gold bead , solid blade or fiber optic sights out quickly and easily.
