I would like to put a scope mount on an old model 10 or 19 that doesn't have the adjustable rear sight so even if I drill and tap it the drilled and taped style scope rail won't fit because they have a recoil lug designed to fit down into the removed rear sights notch. Is there any option for fixed sight k frames besides the side plate and clamp on mounts?

Not all scope bases are designed to use the adjustable rear sight screw / shelf. There are flat bases that will fit on the top strap. If I remember right, Leupold is one. Google it.

Out of curiosity, I have to ask for what use?

If it's to mount a red dot or some other optical sight because your eyes need some help... then as an alternative, what about a pair of Crimson Trace laser grips?

From what I've seen on the various forums where the same question appears regularly, most of the current "no-drill" (clamp on or side plate screw attached) mounts aren't worth a hoot, and those kind seem to be the only game in town.

I would like to add a pistol scope or burris fastfire red dot for better long range accuracy and small game hunting. I don't think a laser goes 50yards very well in bright sunlight and and the front sight covers up allot of the target at that range. The top strap on my 10-5 is rounded so I don't see how a rail will fit on top properly like the flat spot underneath a removable rear sight. I don't mind drilling and tapping the gun. The no drill mounts are hideous and i prefer a low profile rail. I might just have to buy a D&T gun for optics because I like the way my old 10 and 19 shoot with irons under 25y.

On a pre-factory tapped model 19 (or any model 10) it would be a gunsmithing job to attach a secure optics mount, and the gun would then be permanently altered. It may be better to trade up or otherwise acquire a factory capable revolver for this, such as a 19-7 or 586/686-4 or later.

Just a FYI. Any factory drilled revolvers do not share the same screw pattern as the Leupold scope base for the non factory drilled guns. So if you have a Leupold scope base that is for a non factory drilled gun, you cannot use it on a factory drilled gun. My suggestion is that if you have a factory drilled gun and you have a non factory drilled gun and want to mount a scope base, use a factory drilled scope base as a pattern so you can share scope bases if you ever want to change them between guns.
