Great thread!
I'm finding my way back to S&W's after about a 6 year hiatus.
Put a down payment on a new 2 tone 627 V Comp the other day, and hopefully will have it paid off by Christmas. The Rubber grips will be the first thing to go, and I'm finding some great inspiration for new stocks in this thread.

That's a shame, because the grips are pretty ideal for a target gun. The gun that is not very concealable has nothing to argue about rubber grips except how they fit the individual hand. The gun that sophisticated is not really a platform for grip art. Don't get the idea that rubber grips aren't cool.

If it comes with those awful Hogue grips, I agree - straight into the trash.
OTOH, the new 629 grip is plenty nice.
Just wish S&W issued these on more N-Frames.
Here's my TRR8 after the swap over:

Not enough Nightguards in this thread. To me they are the perfect combination of weight and power in a revolver. This is a 325NG.
Here is a wheel of 44s and 45s (seen before)

Recently got this 629-3 and immediately replaced the Hogues with these Altamonts. Haven't even shot it yet (soon)!

New school? This might be middle school. 629-5 4" barrel, pre-lock but MIM parts. The MIM parts don't seem to hurt its ability to shoot straight...
New school? I have found myself looking fondly at 627's lately.

I respectfully disagree. There are so many great grip options out there. I see no reason to saddle such an interesting gun with plain ol' rubber grips. It's not like .357's in a 47 oz N frame are real hard kickers even with full power loads.
Life's too short for plain rubber grips IMO.

Here is my 629-2 I picked up a couple months back. This is my first N frame and I love it. I was getting ready to buy a 629 hunter but I bought this instead just because I already have a 686 Classic with the unfluted cyl so now I have a matching pair. I can always buy a hunter when my funds allow.

You didn't come right out and say that appearance is what really matters (to you). I do the grip art and fit thing with my carry guns, but the big range guns get grips based on how they shoot in my hands. For example, my Smith 625JM came back around the grip trip and works best for me with rubber finger groove grips. My 5" 629 shoots best with Pachmayr's new Diamond Pros. There are others.

Appearance comes secondary to fit and how I shoot (for me) with a given style of grip, but with all the options out there, it's not that hard to find something that both shoots and looks good IMO.
For example, back when I had K frames, I shot equally as well with Pachmayr Compacs as I did with Sanbar Stag Magna style w/ a Tyler T grip.

Here's my only n frame with the IL which is what I interpreted as "New School". Here's my 629-6 Talo w/o the skin shredding grips it came with. It and my 8 3/8" 500 are the only ones I own with the lock.
As far as the rubber vs wood debate, my view is to put the best looking wood on for goin' to church and concealed carry (so your shirt doesn't grab) and put the rubber grips on at the range where you know your hands are gonna get pounded.

Good looking iron there, tin knocker.
I'm with you on the grips. I was sporting a 329 with eagles today while pushing the cart for the misses, very comfortable.
Hope you had a great holiday

I posted earlier in this thread (post 23) with my 629 no dash, with Keith Browns.
Here is my 629-1 wearing Royal Walnut Kuracs. It is not pinned or recessed, but this one has it where it counts. No MIM parts (although MIM probably gets a bad rap), target hammer, target trigger, red ramp front sight and a nice set of Kuracs.
This gun has a GREAT trigger, and is so much fun to just hold, let alone shoot.
I have promised it to a good friend, if he outlives me.

Kind of forgot about this one.
So small, it got lost in the back of the safe:

True, no one likes vintage Sanbar Stag ! I'll trade 'em straight up for a set of Pachy Grippers. :P

Better to have the grips that actually fit you and the gun.

Just scored this magnificent magnum yesterday: 627-0 model of 1989. Christmas came early for me this year
(I apologize for the poor photo quality, currently limited to the phone camera, which is not too hot)

I posted this pistol earlier, but it was still wearing Goodyears then. I ordered some fine looking Ahrends Round butt conversion Retro Combat stocks in Moradillo wood off eBay last Friday and they came in yesterday. I think they dress up my 629 real purty. I can't wait to get to the range and try them out as they feel so good.

Got the new 627 V Comp home, and out to the range.
Pretty happy with it, but the Hogues just don't agree with my hands for double action shooting.
For giggles I put a set of K frame Magnas on it just to see how they felt, even though they didn't fit all that well.
Much better feel in my hand.
Still up in the air as to grips, but finger grooves won't be on the list.
Here's a shot with my old reliable Lyman All American
.
... and did someone say this couldn't be carried?

Thanks Rick A, great idea for a thread about newer N Frames!
Here is my entry to the beauty contest, a Model 29-10. I replaced the factory targets with a set of oiled Ahrends Retro Target grips. They provide a nice contrast to the nickel finish IMHO.

Wood is far prettier, and makes gun porn more exciting...and I'm with you on ditching those Hogues. but you may want consider these Pachmayr "Diamond Pro" grips. These are the most comfortable set of goodyears that i have ever put on a N frame. Also have a set on the 610. Shooting is far more enjoyable, and I don't have to use the death grip as if the wheel gun were wearing smooth woods. This is the 627 shown in a previous post wearing woods, but these Pachs are what it will be wearing at the range.

Couldn't stand the Hogue's a minute longer, so I found a set of RB Pachmayr Presentations, . I've spent a little time with a Model 28(gun belonged to local range) with the same grips and found them to work reasonably well for me. Ditching the finger grooves and letting my fingers go where the want to make me a LOT happier. I always thought the Pachy's were the best looking of the rubber grips too. At some point, something nicer will likely go on this one, but for now, these do the trick.

Rick,
Are you going to pick a winner?
Lots of nice guns,
I'm voting for post #79 and #90.
They are wild looking!
Just thought I'd ask if you plan on doing a poll or something?
It would be fun to see what the members think.

PACHY PRESENTATION GRIPS ARE DEFINITELY THE BEST LOOKING RUBBER GRIPS ON THE MARKET ! ! ! I TOO, HAVE NEVER FOUND A SET OF FINGER GROOVE GRIPS THAT WORK FOR ME. THE CURRENT ISSUE S&W GOODYEARS ARE THE VERY WORST. I RELY ON PACHS FOR PROTECTION OF FIELD OR HEAVY USE GUNS HERE IS A PAIR OF HARD USE NO-DASH 686s…..….
