I just bought a 8 & 3/8 inch barrel 629 off GB so it will be awhile before I get it what with shipping and waiting period.

How do you carry it and in what? Please be as specific as possible. Pics if you have them.

I am thinking of carrying for hunting and general outdoors carry like while hiking. I just don't have a sense of what it is like to carry something so long. Previously the longest barreled gun I have carried is a 4 inch barrel.

Thanks in advance for your ideas.

Concealed a shoulder holster. Hunting a hip holster.

I purchased a new shoulder holster for my ruger sbh w/10 1/2" barrel. They had a new hip holster on clearance too both for $35. Search the net. I can ccw the sbh in the shoulder holster too under a big and tall man's shirt.

maybe a chest holster. If it's a 29 and you want to go hunting.

If it's a 357 I would just take it to the range in a case;)

My 27 with 8 3/8 barrel is very well balanced and not realy heavy but to bulky for carry.

But if you want to hunt rabbits like Elmer Keith go ahead;)

I've used a Bianchi X-15 shoulder rig for years (for hunting) and
it is very comfortable with my Model 29 8 3/8. I honestly forget I
even have it on after the first 15 minutes or so.

I used to have a 10 5/8 barrel Blackhawk 357 Max and it came with a chest holster like GermanHunter talks about. That was a comfortable and easy way to carry that long barrel monster and it didn't get in the way when you sit down. I had swapped a dog for the pistol, holster and around 300 rounds of 357 Max ammo back in 1986 for it.

I carried a 8 3/8in in a x15 shoulder holster for hunting for a few years. I originally bought in for my model 27 years before but it carried the 29 much more!

I picked the shoulder rig because of the length of that 29. It rides under your arm and your gun does not tend to get hit by branches or contact other fauna. Let’s face it you do not hand carry that thing all the time when afield... Many times it’s snowing or raining and it’s comfortably riding under my jacket!

If you want to sit down it’s out of the way. Try sitting down with a belt holster in that length and without taking it off or sliding the belt around its not very comfortable.

I carry my M27-2 with the 8 3/8" in a George Lawrence straight drop belt holster that was bought when I got the pistol in 1975. It was used when I went handgun deer hunting. It's not a combination for concealed carry unless you have on a long winter parka. Don't forget that you will need a very sturdy belt to carry the weight of a N frame S&W. I can recommend one by The Beltman but there are other good one out there.

Just put a sling on it and shoulder it :D

Bianchi X-15 shoulder holster is what I use for my 657 in 8 3/8 inch. I've even carried concealed with this rig before but did have a parka on at the time.
I've got two with one being for 6 inch guns but the 8 3/8 works in that one too but just rides a little higher.
It's a comfortable holster and fine for sitting if you don't use the belt attachment. I'll leave it on in a blind sitting but usually take the gun out for quieter access should a deer show up undetected as the sneaky critters sometimes do.

I use a DiamondD chest holster. You can look them up on your computer. Really a good way to carry a large handgun. Ride your horse, walk, fly the place, ride the 4 wheeler. It's always out of the way and extremely accessable at all times.

Actually Magna-Port offers their "Stalker" conversion for this gun that includes a sling, it's a nice conversion. No matter how you carry it an 8 3/8" barrel is a lot to lug around. I have one and it's hard (and heavy) to carry. I use a shoulder holster but after a long day any comfort that was there is long gone.

My rule of thumb is sling it, & it's no longer a handgun:-)

Seriously, though, does that rig secure to a belt or something? Otherwise it's going to swing with the muzzle pointing every which way.

I've got an inexpensive Uncle Mikes shoulder rig that carries my 7 1/2" Rugers comfortably.
