Range time with the wife
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1418761673.559841.jpg
I went to the range today with the wife. This was only her second time. The first time she would only shoot my Walther P22, but this time she actually shot 2 rounds of .38 out of my Model 27. She mostly shot the P22, but I was really impressed that she actually tried the wheel gun. She's still really scared of loud bangs and the recoil, but she's making great progress. I also took my CZ75 in 9mm, but she wouldn't try that. I purposely took guns with less recoil because I don't want to scare her off. The big, heavy 27 with the weaker .38 was a good call for her. Of course, I also took some .357 ammo for myself. That wheel gun is quickly becoming a favorite of mine.

I find it interesting that when I go to the range (which isn't as often as I'd like) the first few minutes every gunshot is a bit startling - but by the end, unless someone pulls out a S&W 500 or maybe a 44 magnum, I don't even notice.

Not many revolver shooters at my range. Whenever I bring my 619, you hear pop pop pop BOOM. Then a few heads pop out behind the dividers looking my way.
Apparently there aren't a ton of gun owners out there that have shot a 357.

My wife starting shooting and liked .22. She moved up to .38's. Her favorite is my 67 no dash. The last time she went along, she shot my 625JM. I made some "Puppy Loads" ( 200gr Berry's plated RN over 3.9gr. Clays) I like them too! Bob

My wife is pretty much a .22lr shooter. She recently tried .38 Special from my 6" 686 and while she didn't mind it, went back to the Ruger. The 686 and 617 6" were a bit heavy for her.
I just got a 66-4 with 4" and she handled it along with the 617 and noted the lighter weight.
I think she likes it...

I once was shooting my Shield 40, and as a dad and his two pre-teen kids walked out, they stopped to ask what I was shooting. "That thing sounds like a cannon!"
Me:
Too bad this was before I got my 686 and 29-10. They would have really been picking their jaws off the floor. The .44 Magnums (29-10 and new 69) drew a small audience a couple of weeks ago.

I don't shoot at an indoor range but, I tend to "turn heads" with my short-barred magnums.

Ha! I didn't take any pictures of the wifey shooting. I was too busy making sure she didn't point the muzzle towards the people on either side of us!

You guys are lucky, I wish I could get my wife to go to the range with me. She could have her choice of any caliber I have (which is most of them 44 mag and smaller).

If I might recommend double hearing protection. That might make her even less susceptible to the reports.

My wife likes her taurus m94 I purchased for her. But I was shooting the m58 41mag next to her she didn't like the noise. It was her second time shooting in 40 years.

My wife and sons took the ccw course. Found out she needs to shoot with her left eye. She couldn't hit anything with her right eye. Now she's a good shot. She shoots all double action. Sounds like a hammer less 38 is next.

I'll never forget this.
One fine day at the range, it was me, my wife and another couple. Of course the guys were doin' most of the shootin'. After I had just shot a nice 5 shot group and was feeling pretty good about myself, my wife takes out her 4" 66-3, loads 1 round of 158 grain .357magnum and blasts a hole right in the middle of my group.
Showoff!
And yes, she does shoot like a girl.

My girls are like reloads. Start them low and work up. My granddaughter quickly tired of my K-22. She moved up to a M14 and now her favorite is the 686. 38 spl of course.

My first BUG/off duty gun was a SIG 232. I took my wife shooting with it a couple times. One day after a range trip she tells me "This is mine now, you have to get another one". Man I love her.

My Wife always comes to the Range with me. She used to hang the Targets, and then one day she asked me if she could shoot. I started her out on an old S&W 17, and after a while she wanted something larger than a 22lr. I purchaced a Police Surplus M10 Heavy Barrel for her, and she got really good with it. She now shoots a 4" 686-2.

I always wear double hearing protection. And I made her wear soft foam plugs and the ear muffs. Just the way to go in my opinion.

My wife never fired a handgun until I took her to the range about a year ago. She works from home and wanted to learn how to shoot a handgun so she could protect herself when I'm at work. The first gun she fired was my S&W 5906 9mm and was getting on the target with her very first shots. She asked me what else I brought along that had more power, so I skipped a few levels and handed her my 629 Classic Hunter 6" .44 mag. She fired off all 6 shots and barely flinched. She then asked what was the most powerful gun I had and seemed disappointed when I told her that was it!
Her favorite gun at the range right now is my M&P .45, but has settled on a 9mm Sig 2022 for her personal house gun because it holds 15 rds and she is extremely accurate and comfortable with it. Now she's getting into my AR-15's and just got her CCW. I knew she was a keeper when I first met her!

You got lucky. Jumping from a 9mm to a 44 mag for a first time shooter could've turned her off to shooting, permanently. I'm glad it worked out though. Sounds like you've got a real keeper!

I took my daughter to the range the first time and it was a quiet day. I got her set up and explained a few things and someone came into the range. I did not let her hold the gun for a few minutes. She kept asking to start and I said wait a minute. Then the other shooter shot his first round and she jumped. She was fine after that and she understood why I waited. Even with ear protection, it takes a little getting used to.
I agree with the double ear protection. I always use foam plugs with ear muffs. If nothing else, it allows me to adjust them or whatever as necessary without worrying about my eardrums.

I totally agree and wouldn't recommend following my example with a "typical" newbie. I would have started her off with a .22, but she grew up on a farm in upstate NY, fired quite a few of her dads rifles and shotguns and was not at all sensitive to the loud report. She is quite physically fit and works out regularly as well. (She also back-packed through Europe with her girlfriend when in college and stayed in hostels along the way. Something I would be nervous doing!)
It was hand guns that she was not familiar with and got a little cocky when she felt the modest recoil of the 9mm. I thought she would hand it back to me after the first shot with the .44, but she had no problem whatsoever.
A wolf in sheep's clothing if there ever was one!

Tell her to be real careful of her fingers getting burned off at the flash gap , they are close FWIW

Please invest in a couple of sets of electronic ear protection - - - At this time I feel Walkers ( about $60.00 retail ) are the best I have at my range as they do not block conversation while still lowering the noise - - - Champions ( about $40.00 retail ) are easier to find and do a good job of blocking the shots but you will loose about 1/2 second of conversation with each shot. You can get some $10.00 ones at Gander Mountain and other large outlets that will do a good job of blocking the shots but block everything for a couple of seconds after the shots as well.
There are many others out there as well, Please make the investment as they will offer you many years of protection if cared for!

I have two sets of electronic ear muffs already. They both work great. One is a Peltor and the other is a Howard Leight.
