Default Square Butt N frame 629-4, is this a rare gun? PICTURES ADDED!!

So I traded a gun to a buddy and got this 629-4 6" 44 with a Square Butt frame. I didn't think much about it until I started researching it. So the 629-4 model was when it switched to the round butt N frame and the Square butt frame was dropped? Is that correct? Anyone know the total production of the Square Butt N frame 629-4? Thanks!

Sounds like a cool gun. Pretty sure dash fours got the the round butt, new style rear sight, change to the extractor and probably a few other things. I don't think I've ever seen a -4 sq butt must be an early one. Is the grip frame serrated? A photo would be cool too.

Yes, grip frame is serrated, and box has SB under the Stock designation. Defiantly a square butt frame like my 629-1 8 3/8 inch, not a round butt frame like my 629-1 3 inch. I'll post a picture later. So, not many made like this one?

Bet there's not to many of them. I've seen a couple of different explanations on what SB stands for, synthetic grips, synthetic black grips and I think even square butt conversion grips on round butt. I had a link to a gun shop in NJ that had all the codes listed by frame size and generations but damed if I can find it now!

IIRC the SB under the "stocks" label referred to the grips not the frame shape so a RB frame with SB grips would say "SB".

Serrated tang SB frames only until the 629-1 when a 3" RB was offered,
1988 629-2
1989 629-3
1993 629-4, rear site leaf changed to the round style factory , drilled tapped for a scope mount .
1996 RB frame only
1997 629-5, RB only, new thumb piece , smooth tangs .

Very cool gun, I've never seen a -4 in the cardboard box (but I've only got a few of them) my -3's all came in that style box and my -4's came in the plastic case. Thanks for the photos.

I have twenty-nine M629-4's in my s/n collection (I may have more, but sometimes I can't get the dash number). Of those only two are square butts. One a 5-incher and the other a 8 3/8-inch.

I have a early 629-4 six inch with a square butt. It came in the cardboard box also.
Keep those Hogue grips RogerA, they are rare/hard to find (square butt,S&W logos, speed loader cutout on both sides).

Good advice "grip Frame" and I have no intention of selling the grips or the gun. This one is a keeper. Thanks!

Very desirable gun, IMO. There are quite a few sq-butt -4s out there, and they come up for sale from time to time, but they don't sit around long. Not everyone knows about them or is looking for one, but there are enough folks who are that finding and buying one can be tough if you are short on time. Congrats on your new sixgun.
