Default My first revolver

Hello, this is my first post! I just bought my first revolver model 29 snub nose 44 mag performance center. I can't wait to shoot it.
Can someone tell me if this is a round butt or square butt? I'm looking to put hogue grips on it. Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the forum. Congratulations on your new revolver. If you are not used to shooting big bore handguns, I would suggest getting some 44 specials to start with. Full load magnums are going to produce a lot of recoil. Have fun and be safe.

Thanks guys! Yeah I love the looks of this fatty can wait to take it to the range. Never shot 44mags but I'm assuming the recoil is a lil less than my desert eagle 50? It's a hand buster but there's just something about the big bore guns that I love

Your .50AE isn't going to produce as much recoil as a 44 Mag...I agree with the above mention that you should get some 44 special to run through it to get used to the gun.

Awesome first revolver! On this forum it's almost always a 686 or a J-frame (which are great choices).

Yeah it will kick pretty good but it is an all steel gun. What are those, about 40 ounces? The 329NGs are 10oz lighter! I really want to touch one of those off.

Welcome to the Forum!

I love snubs and yes they do tend to multiply.

As others have said start with .44 Specials.

If you intend to fire that a lot with magnum loads I would recommend you change to larger and maybe rubber grips that absorb recoil. I'm sure that piece weighs substantially less than your Desert Eagle 50. You will want something more substantial to hang on to.

Welcome from CT, 44snub!
Cool "first born"! I'm sure you see already, that most of us are of the mindset that one, is not enough.
And for me, neither was eight. Or a dozen...

Default Howdy.....

A Hound Dawg Howdy from SC. That's a really great choice. Do take it easy at first. Unless you REALLY like that kind of stuff the heayy ammo can turn people off if not used to it.

Beautiful revolver, but one that falls well within my definition of a "hard hat gun"!

You can shoot that gun with the grips as-is -- it really isn't that bad. What a great gun. Kinda diving in head first to the deep end for a first gun, but why not? Super fun. I love mine...

My first S&W was also a 44mag. Started out with a M29 six inch.
I later got a 629 4 or 5 inch which I shoot more. I discovered a few things about grips that work for me. I have medium hands that are not very strong. I tried the rubber Hogues. They do not cover the backstrap. It is a very painful combination because they are also thin. I can only shoot about ten rounds at a time. I changes to factory combats because they are wider across the back and distribute recoil better. I have a set of Pachs, the type that come on the Nightguard series, that are rubber, cover the backstrap and in theory would work good on your 629. I use them on my 624 and 625 and they are really easy on the hand. They just don't look that great. Please let us know what you think of the recoil after you shoot it.

One of my first was a 44. After some years my abused wrist could not take it anymore. I get by with 357's these days.

You can't just have one, ya know?

Another good load for the short/light .44s is the Speer .44 Magnum 200 grain Short Barrel Load. It clocks 1080 from a 4" and has a deep HP bullet that is made for the .44 Special that will expand at velocities over 1000 fps. It is the load I use in a 629 Mountain Gun...

...and welcome to the world of revolvers...

Wow thank you all for the comments and advice! I will definately let you all know how it goes after I take it to the range or pig hunting here in Hawaii. Well maybe not pig hunting lol. But yes I'll try the stock grips and then some aftermarket ones. I had a chance to shoot my buds 357 wit heavy loads and i liked it but I wanted more, hopefully this peice will be just fine. Compared to the DE, yes it does feel much lighter as the DE is just a big hunk of metal range fun. I haven't even shot it but I can see the addiction! Revolver are just plain sexy lol.
Thanks again!

Another pair of grips to look at are the Pachmayer Compact. For the N-Frame RB they have a covered backstrap that absorbs recoil well. They came stock on the 2.5" NightGuard series guns...

Also if you don't care for the IL Bullseye Smith here on the forums sells "The Plug"...it is pretty easy to install...

As an owner and shooter of a Desert Eagle 44 and a S&W 629, I highly recommend that you start off with some loads in lighter bullets, and reduced recoil at least to start with. You will find the recoil impulse on the revolver is much different and sharper than what you have with the DE. The long stroke of the DE slide strings out the recoil quite differently than shooting a 44 revolver. And my 629 has a 6 1/2" full underlug barrel, which helps mightily in taming recoil which you won't have the benefit of with that 3" barrel. If you can shoot a 50 DE, then I am sure you can get used to a short barrel 44, but start low and work up on loads.

Well I own a snub .44mag, and I've fired .50 DE. The comparison I offer is the .50AE is similar to a full size .44 with full power loads. Your snubbie will have somewhat more overall recoil, and a lot more muzzle flip.

Grips that fit YOUR hand will make a big difference in control and percieved recoil.

.44Spl will feel very mild. Medium level .44mag will let you know that somthing just happened, but not overwhelming.

And congradulations , and welcome to wheelguns.

NICE start to wheel guns.

Welcome to the forum and to your latest addiction.

I Agee with others, maybe a start with 44 spl is a good idea.

AND.... Consider reloading. Will give you an infinite number of possibilities.

Hell of a big caliber in such a short gun (for your first), but like some have said, I'd start off with some .44 Specials and work up from there.

Depends on how your hands are shaped. I have had both and neither fit me well...just going to depend on the length and thickness of your fingers. A friend had the Decellorators on his 629/5" Classic and loved them. When I bought the gun from him I put on Hogue... No right answer....only what is best for you and your hand size.

Revolvers, esp big bore snubbys, will help you accumulate a large collection of stocks and holsters.
